Hello, what video card do you have? I read "GTX 570" on your signature.
Is it Gigabyte GeForce GTX 570? But with that card it is impossible to edit UHD files. But may be do I make a mistake?

That is on the X58 system and that is a BFG GTX 570. It produces a lot of heat. I mostly use the Z97 system now and it has a PNY GTX 780 that is overclocked and produces very little heat. I got a good price on that and it also has a lifetime warranty.I would look into the GTX 960-GTX 980 Maxwell family cards. They use less power and produce even less heat than the 700 series cards.

        Jerry, I'm editing 4K from a GH4 camera shooting UHD at 23.98fps.

        Here are my project settings,

        Frame Size : 3840 x 2160
        Frame Rate : 23.98
        Aspect Ratio : 1.0000
        Field order : Progressive
Video Channels : YCbCr + Alpha
        Quantization Bit Rate : 8Bit
        Stereoscopic Editing : Disable
        Audio
        Sampling Rate : 48000Hz
Quantization Bit Rate : 16 Bit
        Channel : 2
        Setup
        Render format
        Grass Valley HQX Fine
        Over Scan Size : 0 %
        Audio Reference Level : -20.0dB
        Resampling method
Lanczos 3 Sharper (Best for progressive picture)

Not pre filling the buffer.. if I put a color correction filter on the lower clip and set up a custom layouter on the clip above, then also add a title and just press play, the buffer rises smoothly to 240/240 (without any stutter). Since I rarely need more than such track arrangement this is why I don't see any difference to editing just standard HD.

Do you have personal experience editing 4K 50/60p with a Haswell-E 8 core?

Yes, I do. Look at this thread:http://forum.grassvalley.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=34468
It is a great chip but I want those interested in using 50p or 60p frame rates to not expect that it is going to be a 'magic bullet' for UHD within Edius. If I purchase a chip for $1,050 and I still have to convert to HQX to get better playback, buyers remorse would definitely set in. I can do that for $350. Personally, I'm waiting for Skylake E.
This chip is an excellent choice for HD. There is plenty of headroom and exports are quite fast. I was getting 1:1 on AVC exports. Not quick sync times but quite good.

That is probably true. If you are making the money or just have that kind of money to justify a dual Xeon system, then that is great. But, for the average user, single chips are going to be it. Early adopters will pay the price.
Not until all NLE's and hardware manufacturers get it together, will it become easier to edit UHD. At this point, if you are doing UHD and 4K work, you should also consider your NLE options. Use the right tool for the job.

Just to add to the grunt power discussion Intel have now a 18 core Xeon and HP workstation takes 2 of those. But the CPU's are £3,400 each, which is way above what most people want to pay for a complete edit set up.

Going to look at the PXW-Z100 (general hand held point and shoot 1/2.3 sensor) and the PXW-FS7K (35mm sensor shallow depth of field) and they both do XAVC, both standard and Long GOP.

But I needed first to determine what workflow I would get with system 4 in my signature. I have some FS7 XAVC 3840x2160 @ 50p and 25p I found to download.

The following projects like the buffer pre-loaded first before playback, a characteristic I noticed with XAVC.

              Case 1

Now in a 50p 10Bit project and software only preview mode, system 4 will play it easily and one additional layer set at 50% opacity. 2 layers of 50% over a 100% layer is too much for it and the buffer gradually empties. I can increase to 3 layers of 50p at 50% opacity if switching down to 8 bit. The buffer here in 8bit seems to be /500 whereas elsewhere we have /250.

50p project is however just workable, but needs the 50p hardware output to work with the BMD 12G card - please.

              Case 2

In a 25p 10 Bit Project the limit increases to 5 layers at 50% over 1 layer at 100%. Adding a 6th the buffer slowly counts down.

A 50% track over a 100% track of 50p in a 25p project is worse than in a 50p project, the buffer is counting down. However if I keep this test and switch down to 8 bit I can add another 5 layers at 50% opacity of 50p.

              Case 3

In comparison Premiere Pro CC will not play one 50p layer with the green indicator on, it is orange indicating non real time, and that's with the K4000 GPU, which the core is running at 100%. In 25p PPCC will manage one layer with the GPU at 70%.

              Case 4

XAVC is quite workable whereas ProRes 422 at 50p is not.

I hope this info is useful to someone.

That is probably the Skylake S which should be showing up soon or the Skylake K which the date keeps changing. The Skylake E isn't set for release until 18-24 months from now. That depends on which website is reporting.

Other expected enhancements include PCI Express 4.0 support on the "-E" (extreme) version (for which the release is expected in 2016), Thunderbolt 3.0, SATA Express, Iris Pro graphics with Direct3D feature level 12.0 as the norm, and four cores as the default, with up to 128 MB of L4 eDRAM cache on certain SKUs. The Skylake line of processors is expected to retire VGA support, while supporting up to five monitors connected via HDMI, DisplayPort or Embedded DisplayPort (eDP) interfaces.
