H264 encode giving catastrophic failure nailed

I have nailed the reason why I was getting the above error. I did mention that I cleared the render file and the error disappeared previously but I have subsequently got this msg again.

The reason that I got this error was that I had updated the VGA Intel HD 4000 driver from the Intel site and although the transcode was fast, it gave me the "catastrophic failure" error on long projects.

I have re-installed the original VGA Intel driver that came with my MB (version 8.15.10.259) and since then no more problems.

However, the original driver takes 66 mins to transcode AVCDH to H264, were as the latest driver from Intel took about 30 mins when it worked without an error. Is this speed about right for a 2 hour 15min project which takes about 66mins. (MB Asus P8Z77v-Deluxe Win 7). Quick sync is enabled.

Lastly, has anyone updated, the VGA Intel HD 4000 driver to a later version without getting errors etc.

Without QuickSync (=software encoding) it would take (much) more than 2 hours.
You could try that by yourself (uncheck "HardwareEncoding").

A two hour project will normally encode within 40-45 minutes.

Yes even 2 hours is very conservative without hardware encoding. What I was trying to ascertain is, are there Asus P8Z77 users that use hardware encoding and is 60mins about the time it should take to render a 2hour project (AVCHD to H264-Blu-Ray). Also has any member using this MB updated their VGA Intel HD 4000 Drivers and what is the version they are using.

From your reply, it seems that the times I am getting is about correct as I used VBR and Super Fine, which increased the time slightly. Thank you for the quick reply and God Bless.

I get my driver updates from Gigabyte ( my motherboard manufacturer ) rather than Intel as I have had problems this way in the past too. Sometimes they are the same and sometimes not. I think your times are close to mine. The fastest would be about 45 mins for 2 hours.

Thank you. I feel that for an earlier PC that 60min is about correct. The only reason that I had updated my VGA drivers was, that after the update, the same encode took just 33 mins, but gave the dreaded "catastrophic failure". So again,
