Edius 4.5 and Premiere CS3 on the same system

Can I have Premiere CS3 with Matrox RT on the same system with Edisu 4.5? We have a new system with CS3 and Matrox but we are having a difficult time using Premiere and Encore.

Coming from Edius we find it difficult to do things that are easily done in Edius. For example, How do you apply Panpot and Balance in Premiere? It's easy to do in Edius but we can't figure out how to pan the left and right channels independently and adjust the volumes individually like we do in Edius.

How do you make a motion background in Encore? It's easy with Edius and Workshop. We have been going through Photoshop, AE, Premiere and Encore and still can't figure out how to do it.

I know Premiere is a great product and we wanted ot be proficient in more than one NLE, but this is costing us time to learn Premiere - Encore and try to do the same things we do in Edius - DVD Workshop.

Any help or pointers on where to get information would be much appreciated.

There should not be any conflict in running EDIUS v4.5 on the same system with the Matrox+PremCS3 combo.

I have CS3, Vegas 8 and Edius 4.5 running on my PC with no problems. THe mixer in CS3 window is under window>audio mixer( or even a full setup is there too.This makes the mixer bigger on the screen layout). You now have a full mixer much like the one in Edius with motion, effects buss etc. For motion menus in Encore pick or create a menu, import the clip asset you want to use, drag from assets holding down Alt to the menu, it will now play after rendering( open preview and render to see results). It may well be worth paying for a month or two of tutorials from www.Lynda.com that will give you a good start on Encore and CS3. I still prefer Edius for video and in fact after learning Encore still prefer DVDLab. Vegas is still the best for audio.

In Permiere 6 right click audio line. Then click on audio options, select duplicate left or right. Here you can also adjust gain 0 - 200. You can also use the fade adjustment tool to drag the red rubber band up or down. Holding down shift you can see the percentage of adjustment as well.

Perfect example of how we all get "tainted" by what we first learn on.
This is why I urge people looking at new editing software to take a step back.
Remember what you want to do, not how you want to do it.

Most software can do the same thing - it's just that you need to approach it in a different manner.

Right! And that is what we are doing. Thanks for all the help so far. I will load Edius onto the system and see what happens.

Obviously Premiere can do some things that Edius can't and vice versa. Like Premiere has an audio normalize feature that Edius doesn't. But the audio mixer in Premiere is not the same as PanPot and Balance in Edius.

The Premier mixer doesn't allow individual control of Left and Right balance and volume. It just adjusts the "mix". Take a look at your hardware mixer and you will notice that each channel has a pan knob and a volume slider or knob. That is what Edius has. Premiere doesn't from what I can tell.

So it is not just a question of methodology, but of finding out the functional differences also.

Now I have to decide whether to return the Matrox RT breakout box and get the Edius NX breakout. But then will Premiere output through NX?

In CS3, only in Standard Def, running the NX in "ADVC" mode. No plug-in exists for CS3 for full NX I/O, nor is there likely to ever be one.

I don't understand your comments about the mixers. In my mind the Edius mixer is the most primitive of the mixers compared to Vegas and Premiere. In their basic form they all operate the same way with simple volume control for a stereo audio track. Individual mono tracks also work the same way and to get individual pan control all stereo tracks will have to be converted to mono tracks in all these programs. Premiere and Vegas mixers have the option to create sub mixes of the individual tracks in their mixers and use these rather than creating mono tracks from the stereo original. As with a hardware mixer a stereo track pan control balances the tracks in the audio mix( hard left gives left channel hard right the right channel) and a mono track is panned between the left and right output.
