  • Getting a lot of crashes recently...Help.

    Hello,

I am using the new PX-270 Panasonic cameras and while the image quality is stunning, the editing is less than stellar.

I am editing a 4 camera shoot now and am getting a lot of freeze/crashes in multicam. I know this codec is sort of new but at what point is this an "Edius" issue or a computer power issue?

Right now I have rendered two of the camera streams and made HXQ files out of the rest. So no raw footage is being played in the timeline. So is this a codec issue? (the codec is still choppy no matter what).

The source footage was shot in 1080p60 but I am editing in 720p60 to be able to see on my external monitor. (10 bit as well). How much of a drag is the realtime downsample? Is that my issue?

I can post a crash report if anybody knows how to read it.

Thanks for your help as I am not used to having such a horrible editing experience with Edius.

Tim, this sounds like more than just the camera codec. Do you have any AE bridge or NB plugins installed on your system? When you did the update, did you use the full installer? If so, did you select Directx to be installed? If not, in some cases this could cause the crashing. Do you get the crashing with just 2 or 3 layers on the timeline?

      Hey Jerry,

I updated with the little reminder that opens when you start Edius and just ran it from there. If this method does not work the best then why is it offered?

There was no option to choose to update DirectX.

What I am seeing is sync issues with the video and audio in multicam. When I start from a dead stop everything is in sync. After I choose a few cameras it get kind of out of sync. After a bit of editing it seems like system overload and the milky freeze of death appears. Game over... Single track has no sync issues.

I never had this issue in the past with mpeg-2 4:2:2 footage but that was not 10bit 1080p60 AVC stuff. Before I talk myself into a system upgrade (oh, twist my arm :) ) I want to make sure this is not a software issue.

What do you think I should do here? Reinstall Edius with the full installer? BTW, I am using the Blackmagic Shuttle over USB 3 with the 10.1 version of BM software. Too many variables going on...

      Thanks

First off, have you considered that the project is corrupt?

Do you have just a basic Windows clone from your previous install? (Make sure to deactivate all of your software) If so, use that and then install all of your editing software...rebooting after each application is installed. Some will ask you to, others won't. Reboot anyway.
This should get rid of any of the system gremlins.
Install Edius from the full installer making sure to check the Directx box. In the update installer Directx is automatically installed.

Once you are all loaded, give your multicam project a test...and hopefully it isn't corrupt.

I do not think it is corrupt because this behavior is happening in other projects as well.

I hate this because you get in the middle of a project and need to finish it. So you do not have time to do very much about issues. I will have to wait until things calm down work-wise to do anything, especially a re-install of Windows.

Total system remake is something I am familiar with but I do not totally trust that it will make the problems go away.

Also can you clarify are you using AVC intra or AVC ultra?

The codec is AVC Long GOP from the AVC-Ultra family of codecs.

A side note, I get a crash every time I try to adjust the length of a transition. Does this point to anything?

I'm not seeing any of that behaviour with the clips you provided me. What version of Edius are you currently using? As far as a redo of the system. I have always found that it fixes many things that would take me days to find. That is why I have several clones at different stages of the build. If I need to do a redo, it is much easier to start at a clean Windows install than to do it from the start. If I just need a version with Edius on it, I have that. If I need a clone of the latest version, I have that as well. It is just easier to clone from the particular stage that you need than to do a complete redo.

I am using the second to last 7.4 version.

What software are you using for your clones? I used to use the free Seagate software but an update made it unstable and it did not seem to like SSD drives.

Any ideas about the transition causing crashes?

Is there a place to send crash reports (with feedback)? How else do we decipher the root of issues?

I'm using Acronis to do my clones. I have an older version and it works just fine.

I take it that you added the transition after making your multicam into a single layer...correct? Look to see if you have the 'extend clips' option in settings checked. I'm not saying this is the cause, just offering up an option.

If you are using Win 7 then you can use the built in backup software to make an image

Thanks. I will check into Acronis as I do not like using the Windows Image backup as much.

I have 'extend transition' on but the transition was on a layer above going to a layer below. I do not compress to a single track and do not see why this would be an issue.

No word on these crash reports? This seems like the best way to see what is causing the problems but they are useless if nobody looks at it.

I have not experienced issues with the Win7 image tool

to give you an idea, I recently made an image of my Samsung 840 Pro in 6min

I then removed the 840 Pro and inserted an 850 Pro and restored the image in 7min

                          all software remained activated

to retain activations in Arconics, you have to do a byte per byte image which takes forever

O.k. I will have another look at the Windows backup... Does it work for drives that are not the same size or type? ie a 240GB SSD image put on a 500GB hard drive?

No hope on the Edius issue? Crash report?
