  • Calling all PAL Editors

This problem only refers to PAL Video editors using Edius 4.24..4.51c Remember the thread I started in the old forum about the Stand-alone PCE showing PAL video to be NTSC? It lasted 2 years until we got a service pack for PCE. Well it seems as if it is back again but this time in the bundled Edius version. I first noticed it when selecting a generic preselect - the video is then suddenly shown as being NTSC 29.97 fps!

Using the wizard (first option) is okay except it shows the field option to be upper field first, the generic option gets it all wrong including the size and speed of the clip and tells us it is NTSC!

Second thing is: Field order in advanced options. I thought it is supposed to be set to bottom field first? - It is set at upper field first and cannot be changed.

Now this could be me as I am getting on a bit but I get the distinct impression that my DVD-Videos now give a jitter during panning. The stand-alone PCE with the service Pack (01.12.02.00) shows the video clips to be PAL with bottom field first and the advanced options can be altered by hand.

Why can't the advanced options be changed manually in the Edius PCE Version? Is there anybody else out there having the same problems or have discovered something similar?

Hi, I noticed that too, that the PCE default to NTSC video, when I select a generic Target !!

        also,

PCE Express stand alone not for Edius 4, was a correct program for PAL-DVD-and you can choise too Lower/Bottem Field first., it is a fine program.
but not as plugin for Edius 4. Also with watch folder convert for Canoncompactcameras films by 4:3 PAL from 15 to 25 frames.
PCE for Edius 4,03 do not with watch folder correct convert 4:3 it was always 16:9. Well you have choise to DVD PAL Lower/Bottem Field,
PCE for Edius 4,52 watch folder convert now correct, but now I can not
select to DVD-program stream Pal for Lower/Bottemfield, only to Upper Field

So i have 2 PCE-program on my computer

To clarify (because it seems to continue to confuse people), Upper-Field First MPEG-2 for DVD is the preferred field order and is valid!

The Target field order is independent of the source field order in ProCoder and ProCoder Express (for EDIUS). As long as the Source field order is correct, the conversion should be correct in either field order.

The reason why the DVD Target field order was changed to Upper Field First was because some older PAL DVD players have problems with Lower Field First material.

After some testing though for PAL IT would seem encoding Lower field first SEEMS to produce a smoother m2p file. After a little reading up this should not matter as you say but watching an SD project on a 42 in plasma tv when you have encoded upper field first produces a ghost like image following a person in a panning shot the faster the motion the more pronounced it SEEMS to be.

On re-encoding the same EDIUS timeline LOWER field first it seems to be smoother

I use SEEMS as I am not 100% sure

            Thimk I need a rest................18 hrs streight and I need a break!

Sounds like there's some kind of field reversal going on, which would mean that the Source settings are incorrect (or the source file was rendered with incorrect field order).

Or the player doesn't adhere to field order flagging and always assumes lower field first...

Blimey GV BH You are only right (red face) and there you go another mystery solved!!!!

The source file had incorrect field order rendering:-)

I hope you got some rest. I've been "caught in the hamster wheel of thought" on more than a few occasions due to lack of sleep. :)
