  • Edius 6 "Stalls" uploading AVCHD m2ts Video Clips into Bin.

Hello, for the last 4 days I've been having issues with Edius 6 stalling and the edit windows & clip bin fade to "White." Here is what occurs: I am uploading AVCHD m2ts video files the size of 3.34 GB, 7.21 GB & 9.35 GB to the bin. I drag the clips "ONE AT A TIME" from my video download folder to the BIN. The clip is now in the BIN, can be seen and the "H" is on the clip. The % rate is shown as the time it is downloading. Then at 25% or even 56%, the rate of download completely stops!! I click on the clip and all Edius panels fade to white and the system goes into "Wait" mode white the Windows BALL sits and spins. EDIUS never comes back up to where I can enter the clips in to the bin or edit. I have had to shut down EDIUS with TASK MANAGER many times for it will not do anything productive. I can open previous projects that have more than 3 HD video clips and Edius will cooperate.

Uploading these 3 video clips has been a real headache. I do this every month for the same client and it is usually a 45 minute project to upload, edit, create menus & burn to DVD. I know it's not my hard drive for I can open the video clips from my uploaded video folder, then play them back in Windows or other playback software before they are even added to the EDIUS Bin.

I have cleared off lots of space from larger projects on all internal & external hard drives, so it is not a space issue to store the files. The drives have 75% open space on each with one drive with 1 TB of space to use.

My system is NOT connected to the internet, it is a STAND alone system so no viruses could have attacked it from the web. Could the Edius software be on a bad sector of my hard drive? Could the EDIUS external plug in that I purchased gone bad? I'm at a loss on what the problem could be. Any help or direction would be helpful!!!

    Thanks,
Joe - Owner Band Wagon Video Productions.

    My system is as follows:
    Asus SABERTOOTH P67 REV 3.0 Socket 1155/ Intel P67,
Quad CrossFireX & Quad SLI/SATA3 ATX motherboard.

    nVidia GeForce GTX460 1GB DDR5 2DVI/HDMI SLI PCI-EXP video card
WIN 7 Professional with Intel CORE i7 Processor,

    i7-2600 3.4 GHz, 8MB Quad Core,
    8GB, 240-Pin DDR 1600 MHZ Dual Channel

Are you adding to bin or adding and transfer?

Adding is instant, transfer takes time, as the files are transcoded into the transfer folder in the project.

If these video clips are on a hard drive in your computer you should be able just to add them to the bin. So you could try that, leaving Edius just to draw the waveform file.

Transfer is set by the ticking the tickbox in the file dialogue.

There are some files I have met where should there be something wrong with them they will freeze Edius.

You describe some fairly large files. Is there any linking of sections like over a 2Gbyte boundary? (Set in the recording device according to the card format like FAT32). Have they been recorded differently in any way this time? If that's how they have been recorded I believe you will need to add and transfer to bin from the camcorder itself via USB.

Can you test record a 5 minute file and try that on its own?

Difficult to say these are just some suggestions.

How do you add to the bin ?

My normal approach is to right click in bin and select " add file ".

I normally do theatre shows so add files of normally 12G or more per act and from my FDR-AX1 50G or more. So for a 4 camera show 25G or more per camera and they appear almost instantly in the bin. Drag to the timeline and then it takes a little while to draw audio waveforms.

Files go from the camera to PC with Sony transfer software depending on model so are clips when on the PC in M2TS for AVCHD or mp4 for the FDR-AX1

since you are using EDIUS6, it is important to get the clips off the camera and onto your video drive prior to adding to EDIUS bin, otherwise EDIUS will hang a long time trying to generate waveform files and avchd seek files from your cards

once on hard disk, the whole process is way faster especially with fast disks like Raid or SSD

Yes Ron I do exactly the same as you once the clips are on the video drive.

As it used to work OK the only other thing is updated codecs or a Windows update but it would seem not to be that as you have no web connection.

I am suggesting we forget those clips for a moment to see if we can isolate the problem.

Firstly I think you have still got the clips from your last project on hard drive and will they successfully add to the bin in your new project?

If OK that counts out something odd with Edius opening clips in a new project.

Are these the exact same cameras as before?

What plugin was it you said you had purchased?

Is there any other way to get a clip off the cameras to the hard drive? Like copy from the memory card with a card reader rather than go through the Sony software? Does that work?

Edius parses the file and if it finds an error in it it will get stuck. What we don't yet know is why. Can you record a file on the AX1 that is just a few minutes and try to bring that in.

Is the audio format any different from normal?

Mike, I don't have any problems I was just trying to see if Joe was adding to the bin in a different way that would cause problems as Anton was suggesting.
My Sony's use different transfer software depending on whether they are a consumer or pro version. CX700, XR500 and AX1 all use Playmemories Home and the NX5U and NX30U use Content Management Utility. Hopefully the new Sony free software due out shortly will transfer any Sony camera files.
