  • Output format to play on USB/Laptop Flawlessly?

Please excuse my lack of knowledge. Technology changes so fast!

First there was DVD. Then there was Blu-ray. Now USB "stick" seems to be what everyone wants to play a DVD or Blu-ray quality video on a computer.

Within Edius, what is the best output format, codec and bitrate to play a DVD quality or Blu-ray quality (30min) show on a modern laptop computer via a USB stick? Both PC and Mac compatible. AND without glitches!

    Thanks for reading and replying.

    Cheers,

    Paul

    Hi Paul,

MP4 seems to be the most compatible and will be seen by all computers, and if you keep it under 4 GB you can format the USB as Fat32, which most TVs will now see.

If, however you are over 4 GB and have to use NTSF format, you're compatibility with TVs will plummet.

To get around this I use a program called SamLogic, which allows menus etc on a USB (like a DVD), for Act 1, Act 2, Program, Pictures, etc. This allows me to use smaller file sizes to keep each section under 4GB, and seems to be the best option.

    Cheers, Vaughan

I would try formatting exfat, should work with everything and has no 4G file size limit

mp4 is ok unless the windows user has set QT player as the default player for mp4, in which case playback will ****

I was too quick to reply.

Mpeg4 is a codec of Quicktime or a standalone file type?

I look inside the Edius Export and I have only the MP4 option in Quicktime.

So will I be creating an MOV with a Mpeg4 codec or what.

I also want to encode for DVD quality (720x480) and Blu-ray (1080). Two separate USB sticks for testing.

May I ask for a little more info. Step by step if it would be too much trouble. First time I've done this.

          Thanks,

          Paul

This is what I have come up with that seems universal on PC and MAC
Have not tried it on a TV so be aware
This has come from making a number of eulogies for friends who have passed away and were played at the service
Mp4 gave disappointing results when played on a MAC

Attached are the settings I used

I just encoded my first H264/AVC/MP4 with default settings. 2GB on a thumb drive.

Inserted in my Samsung "smart" TV. Played flawless and sharp 1080p for 25mins.

                I'm very impressed.

                Now more tests on computers.

I will try the WMV as well. Thanks for that tip.

                  Vaughan,

Are you using Samlogic's CD-Menu Creator 2014? Any problems with it? Thanks.

                    Hi David,

Seems to be fine. No problems here. It's just a bit basic, that's all.

You can put in title, and sub-title. Hard to put in logos.

                    No drag and drop!

                    Cheers,

Thanks Vaughan. It does seem a little basic but I can't find anything better. I'm sure it will evolve over time (just like everything else). Cheers.
