  • Ghosting in 24P

New to Shooting and Editing in 24P. I must be missing a setting of some kind. Please Help!

Shots with motion show Ghosting, both from the RAW footage, shot with a Canon 6D, and trans-coded to GVAVI.

The same clip looks fine in QTPlayer as well as in my clients FCP system.

Who do I get 24P looking right in a 24P Edius Project?

Check the actual frame rate and project settings so that they match exactly. Also, you need to see what the clips look like on an external monitor and not just the computer monitor.
Certain movements when shooting in 24 or 23.98 from either the cast or the camera, will create the 'ghosting' as you called it.

Is that per chance the result of frame blending to bump 24FPS to 30 FPS?

        Canon 6D records at:
        1.920 x 1.080 (29,97, 25, 23,976 B/s) Intra- oder Inter-Frame
        1.280 x 720 (59,94, 50 B/s) Intra- oder Inter-Frame
        640 x 480 (59,94, 50 B/s) Inter-Frame

So just put the files to BIN, then speed up fps rate 23.976 -> 24 fps to be able to edit then at real 24p! ;)

          Thanks for the ideas...

The actual Edius project is 24 P I am in the field on just a laptop, so perhaps it is fine once it gets out to screen. Strange that QTPlayer does not show this "ghosting", nor my clients laptop in FCP. I converted 23.98 to 24P in the bin and Didn't seem to help. See Attachment

Try a new project with 23.98 and import the file to see if it works better.

Did you speed-up the files or have you "converted" them?
Speed-up works by assuming 24p to the files by file properties, not by conversion!!!
Quicktime does not show ghosting because it shows the file native at its native frame rate.
While Edius project has 24p it would convert every different frame rates to the target frame rate by frame blending.
              So everything is as expected!

                Thanks Jerry,

That did it. Sorry to be so green on this. I did not expect there to be such a critical difference between the two video presets, in fact I was not aware that there was a separate video preset for 23.98 until you mentioned it. I have been avoiding shooting 24P because I had seen these kinds of issues in the past. Now I am going to have to take a second look at it.

Thanks to all who offered there input on this!

                  for future reference:

I often have to edit in a pure 24p preset for cinema release, especially the Isle of Man TT every year

so, if the source footage is 23.98p or 25p, the trick is to change the clip frame rate in the bin (as mentioned) prior to dragging to timeline

do not convert, it is all just a flag change in the clip properties

you can change bin view to detail icon and then select all clips, change frame rate to 24p, done, takes 2 seconds

be sure the bin view detail section contains frame rate

                    Thanks Anton,

It is such a relief to know that this was just a setting issue and not a weakness in the camera, Edius or the 24 frame-rate in general! I was a little worried there for a moment when it looked great in FCP but not Edius.

                    This is great guys..

                    Thanks

It is always a good thing to verify the resolution and frame rate of the files prior to creating your project. Usually, the redundant things are the ones that we overlook and end up costing the most time.

Glad you got it to work.
