HELP: Edius 4.5x crashing after start

Customer used Edius 4.24 with the following hardware:

Tyan S2462 mainboard with 2 x Athlon 2600MP
1GB Ram
Ati X1950Pro graphic card
DVStorm2
Windows XP Professional SP2

Instead of updating I've decided to do a fresh install of 4.5x...and now I'm stuck. After a fresh install (Windows XP Professional SP2, mainboard driver, Catalyst 7.6 or 7.10 with and without CCC) I tried several Edius versions (4.51, 4.51c, 4.52) with the same result:

I double click the Edius icon, program starts and I can choose my default folder. Then, I generate a new preset (no preset is saved until then). When clicking ok I wait some seconds for a preset icon to show up but it won't. 'Edius encountered a problem...' message appears and that's it. It makes no difference if I disable the Storm or not. OHCI only has the same result.

Side note: I can open old projects but when I try to change project settings Edius will also crash when trying to generate the preset icon.

Here in Austria we have a legal holiday today, I'm 350 miles away from my wife and my customer needs the machine urgently. Thank you in advance for your help!

Anyway, some further observations:

- It makes no difference which Catalyst driver I use, tried 7.6, 7.7, 7.8, 7.9 and 7.10. Result: crash.

- It makes no difference if I do I fresh install of 4.5x or an update from a functional 4.24. Result: crash.

- It makes no difference to change bios settings (eg aperture size). Result: crash.

I have the dim feeling that the crashes may be related to the graphics card being AGP type.

I'm not so sure it's graphics card related, since you are having problems before you even engage the full interface (and overlay).

If I read this right, the crash happens after you select a project setting to base a preset off, and before you click the "Start" button?

Crazy idea, but have you tried creating a new user on the system, with Admin privileges and then launching EDIUS from that new user and see if it crashes there?

(what you're doing basically, is creating an entirely new user profile and ECP file)

Did you update to the last DirectX?
This solved my similar StartUP problem!

I choose my preset settings (eg Storm, 4:§ 48kHz) and close the window. On other systems an icon for the preset will be generated immediately but here I have to wait some seconds and instead of an appearing icon I get a crash.

When I restart Edius (only possible after a reboot) the icon is there but before I can click it Edius crashes again.

Yes, tried various DirectX flavours including the version on the Edius DVD and the so called August update.

Same thing here

The same thing happens here too,exactly as described above, on 3 different systems.
All have AMD CPU's and 1 GB Ram, nvidia cards.
I also tried on a fresh install of the OS.
DirectX was updated to the latest vers.
Version 4.24 works, though.
One thing you can do about it is to start your project directly on the file, not by starting Edius from the desktop icon or from the Programs menu.
So, is this a bug or Edius v4.5x does not support non SSE3 cpu's?

I can't believe that SSE3 is a must since TGV doesn't point it out anywhere.

Do you have an older graphics card to try? The Tiger MP is AGP 2x/4x only and had some finicky power issues to begin with, so a modern high-powered graphics card might be pushing things too far.

reduce graphics card hardware acceleration by a few notches just for testing

if Edius now works, the problem is your graphics card or driver not suitable for 4.5

be sure to reset acceleration to max after testing

To clarify:

1. The board isn't the TigerMP, it's the Thunder K7.

2. Power isn't an issue and Edius 4.24 works flawlessly.

3. The graphics card is an Ati X1950Pro with 256MB Ram and eg capable to run Vitascene on the machine.

But if I am not wrong it uses the not so good mp760 chipset the same as the 2460.

The K7 was on the certified board list. Canopus even used it for their high end turnkey CWS-100.

*Shrug* Well, if you're sure everything's running right then it's something else weird.

The 760MP was okay. The 760MPX was the problem chipset, at least for the Athlon MP days.

Brandon, V4.24 runs like a charm. Even the Ati hardware renderer does a decent job, Boris and Vitascene, too.

Maybe someone can comment on the CPU not being SSE3 capable. Is this the root of all evil?

My P4 Williamette here has only SSE and SSE2 - and it works fine with EDIUS v4.52.
It's too slow to use for "real" editing, but it works fine for testing behavior.
