  • Cropping the propellers out of 4K gopro

Phantom Quadcopter GoPro video shot in 4k (so that stills can also be had) often has whirlling propellers in the top 1/4 of the 3840x2160 frame.
I wish to crop those out and export to 1920x1080
Was hoping I'd find a crop tool similar to photoshop but layouter offers it's own method which I find difficult to figure out.
Will someone please point me to a resource I can study to nail this please
    tks

    Hi Bruce.

If you use layouter fairly much in the same way as you would zoom/blow in, in PhotoShop, grab the corner and zoom until you are happy then reframe for positioning. Just remember though, if you are in a 4K timeline and do any amount of zooming you will be losing resolution if the project and output are set for 4K. If however you are using 4K footage in a 1080 project, you can zoom and move by a huge amount as long as you don't go beyond the 1080 limit within the 4K source, and you will have great resolution. Just stay within the 2D parameters of layouter for what you want.

There really is no other way, as you do need to apply a certain amount of manual control to get this right. You also have the option of creating key frames if you would like to track your zoom and movement.

Also, and please don't take this the wrong way, but. The use of the word crop would really imply a change in your video screen aspect ratio. The method you are talking about is really known as reframing or pan/scan/zoom.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,
    Dave.

      tks
      I drop my 4k on a 1080 timeline
      open layouter
Crop the top down a bit to get rid of the props
just eyeball the side crops? to maintain 16:9
or is there some method whilst cropping the top which maintains aspect ?
Click out of Crop into transform and drag the cropped frame back up to 1080
Seems to work except for the guessing the side crops

Sorry, I may be getting this the wrong way. Are you wanting to change the shape/geometry of your original 4K frame but within a 1080 project.

As Dave said forget any cropping
Change the size (Stretch) in layouter and then re position the clip in layouter
          Very Simple
