  • cannot adjust colour in mask tool

I would be very grateful if anyone could throw some light on this problem.
I shot a green screen interview. Massive soft light as the key. Small soft light as the fill.
The fill light is reflected in the white of the eye. I want to get rid of this.
I already have a three way colour correction filter, YUV curve, a Robuskey chromakey and a garbage filter stacked onto the clip.
On top of them I have brought in a mask filter and have used the oval tool to isolate the area that the eye is within during the interview.
Within the mask filter I have opened up a three way colour correction tool. Using the secondary colour correction tools I have isolated (more or less) the offending white reflection.
    See screen grabs.
But I am unable to adjust the colour within the selected area by using the wheels etc.
I cannot understand why this is not working as I expect it to.
    Any suggestions please?

Click on the number value within the color wheel boxes. A blue highlight will appear. Now scroll your mouse wheel. If you click on the node in the center of the color wheel, you can adjust the HUE with your wheel.
To adjust values other than hue, click on those specific values. You can either adjust with your mouse wheel or by holding your left mouse button down and dragging the mouse. Basically, you have to tell the color correction
interface which item that you want to adjust.

You also might want to use the Draw path tool instead of the oval. This will give a more acurate mask. You might have to keyframe it a little, but it will be spot on.
If there is virtually no movement of the body, the oval is fine.

      Hi:

You have checked Hue, Saturation and Luminance in the "Limit-Area"!
Uncheck them (especially Hue) and it will work.

Uncheck the hue, saturation, and luminesense tickboxes before trying to adjust any of the color settings.

          Hi Jerry and Kurt

Thank you so much for the quick replies.

I have been using the colour wheels and the numeric parameters to try to make an adjustment.

If I uncheck the hue, saturation and luminance boxes then all of the oval mask is selected. See attached screen grab.

What I have been trying to do is to select that tiny reflection in the eye on the left of the screen using the secondary correction tools ie the hue, saturation and luminance sliders. This seems to have worked. See mask in mask1 image in the original posting.

However I have noticed that if I uncheck the secondary colour correction slider boxes (so that the complete oval is selected) and wind down all of the colour wheel adjustments to the minimum settings the bright white reflection that needs adjusting remains very bright. See attached screen grab.

So I am wondering if the problem is that it is just not possible to adjust the colour of the whites sufficiently within Edius.

I was hoping that if I dropped the saturation to a minimum and did the same to the contrast that I might be able to reduce the intensity of that white reflection.

Can anyone think of a way to do this?

            Hi Richard:

            See my attached images.

            1) I draw the mask as seen in Image Bild-010. The more precise you draw the better the result will be.

            2) Image Bild-011 shows the mask-parameter I used (POT-Farbabgleich = Color Balance; I am an Austrian).

            3) Image Bild-012 shows the parameters of the filter color balance I have used.

            4) Image Bild-013 shows the result of my efforts.

Maybe this could be a first approach, a first help for you?
PS: If the person is moving in the time then you have to use keyframes in the mask to let the mask (position, size, form) follow the person. Maybe - worst case - that you have to set a keyframe at each frame. Hope the best for you!
            Regards kurt

              Have had this problem before
Very easy to cure if you have Boris RED, but can be done in Edius
              After setting your color key
Click to show just the key as per your first illustration in post 1
Add a mask to select just around the eye and place "block color "filter inside the mask set to "BLACK"
Make sure the mask does not go outside the face during movement
Export a HQ file of the Black and White mask
Now Remove / disable the color Key and export the full color clip
Go to the BIN, select both the black and white mask and the output full color clip
              Right click and select "Convert"
              Select "Alpha Matte"
At the bottom left the two clips will appear under "Fill Key(F)"
Select which ever one gives the correct transparency you want
Type a name for the file and Click save
the saved file will have removed the green screen but left the eye intact

              ADDED
Then place the clip you just created in place of the original, the new clip has transparent Alpha channel

              Regards Barry

Thank you so much for your solution and for taking the time to illustrate it so well.
It makes perfect sense but I do not have time to deal with each frame.
There is about 25 minutes of interview.

                Barry
This approach seems to be along the lines of what I have been trying to achieve but I am struggling a little to understand the procedure.
I follow you to this point:
Click to show just the key as per your first illustration in post 1
                But I get lost here:
Add a mask to select just around the eye and place "block color "filter inside the mask set to "BLACK"
I tried using the combine filters filter. But I end up with the second mask overriding the first. Image attached.
                I must be misunderstanding something.
Please could you have a guess at where I may be going wrong.

                  OK Point taken
                  I missed a few steps
                  Here are some illustrations
Export a HQ clip of the original without filters, I have called it GIRL place in and out points over the clip
                  No 1 original
No 2 Mask: Set the color key mask for the complete clip
Click on the "Key Display Button"
Export the black and white clip and bring it back onto the timeline
Add the Black mask, I have placed it around waist level
No 3 Export the black and white clip as a HQ file call it Mask after setting in/out points
No 4 Go to the bin and select BOTH clips GIRL & MASK, right click and select "Convert<>Alpha Matte"
No 5 Select "Luminance Matte" in the pull down box at the bottom
Select the Clip to give the see through in this case it is GIRL
Select destination and name and save, it will appear in the BIN
Place on the timeline over the background clip

I think that is better than the info I gave before, been sometime since I did it this way since getting Boris RED

                  ADDED
Sorry one mistake in the above the color inside the mask should be "WHITE" not black, its is black in Boris and done differently
Sorry about that the white area is not touched by the key, thats what you get trying to remember aster using something else
