  • Latest version of Edius support Canon XA 20/25 MP4 timecode/metadata, etc?

I'm still using V. 6.06, and was just wondering if Edius 6.5 and/or 7.xx now support the metadata from MP4 files recorded on the Canon XA25 (or 20)?

There are no issues with the AVCHD files recorded on these cams, however if you recored to MP4 and import into Edius it does not read the time/date stamp, nor does it have the clip timecode.

If this has not been addressed, what would be the best way to request this for the next dot release?

    Thanks,
    Tim

Canon released a user downloadable firmware patch (Firmware Version 1.0.3.0) for the XA20/25/G30 in mid January. This is said to have fixed a metadata issue with MP4 time code that impacted FCP-X (and corrected some other stuff as well). Wonder if that patch also addresses the issue you mentioned? That patch is available for download at the Canon web page for the XA20/25. (Said to take about 10 minutes to install - but I have not installed it yet.)

Yeah, I saw that and have downloaded the file, just haven't patched it either. I'll definitely be giving it shot, but I am doubtful as it is FCPX specific issue.

I was reading something somewhere else (probably a thread here on the forums, or an article from GV maybe) that seemed to indicate proper reading of metadata was on the NLE developers end.

I'll probably flash the firmware tonight or tomorrow and let you know. Unless of course someone else chimes in here with some new info.

I normally do not shoot MP4 with my XA20.
I shot a couple short MP4 clips at 24 Mbps tonight.

Opened with Edius Pro 7.21, it showed clip time code as expected, set to starting where the previous clip left off on my camcorder.

Opened the same files with Neo 2.5, each clip's TC started at zero.

Same here, although sometimes it is preferred. Especially when you want to shoot something over-cranked (slow-motion), it is the ONLY option for some reason. Given that it is one of the few cameras that does TRUE over-crank, I don't mind it having to be MP4, just wonder why?

Anway, thanks for the report. Does it also show the date/time info either under properties, or if you select that to be displayed on the overlay?

          Thanks,

RecDate/Time not shown under clip properties or in the bin view.
Start TC and End TC are shown.

Hmmm, bummer ... not quite there yet. At least the timecode is working. Is this without applying the firmware update, correct ... just a fix from Edius's end?

I still would definitely like the date/time info to be pulled like it is for AVCHD. Any idea where we send request for something like this?

              Thanks again.

Correct. I have downloaded the XA20 firmware, but have not taken the time to install it yet - maybe tonight.

If Edius uses Quicktime for MP4 file processing, then maybe the patch for FCP will do the trick.

Of course there still is the file time/date stamp.

Yeah, I was pretty doubtful it would. As I said, I think GV has to address the issue.

The problem with the file time/date stamp is:

                    a) it can easily be altered, and;
                    b) it does not provide running date/time data throughout the clip like having it in the metadata would. It's kind of a "secondary timecode" if you will.
