  • Advice please

    Hi folks,

I have been using DV Storm 2 for the last number of years and now need to up-grade. As I'm not the most - let's say, technically savvy of people, I would really appreciate some advice please. From "scratch" what would you advise computer wise along with software/harware etc. I know this is a rather broad question, but your reponses would be so appreciated.

    Thanks!

Mark I am in the same boat - However I thought I would take a chance without spending any upgrade money first.

I had built a pc about 2 years ago with the first of the P4 SKT 775 800mghz FSB

On an intel 915 gev board 2 gigs ram and SATA 1 HDDS

I already had EDIUS 2.5 and had not used it as the Premier 6.5 was working well with my storm 2

I decided I need to change and tryed Prem Pro and Edius 2.5

I liked the EDIUS way of working far better than PP2 so I opted for an upgrade to Edius 4.5 and I installed it on the same pc

I am amazed how well it runs and the real time is more than with storm and p6.5

So I am now learning EDIUS FAST!!!!

I am looking to go HDV next year so I will be building a pc to run Edius on a OHCI card in the first instance.

Then I may well get the NXE card to compliment.

SPEC may well be similar to many here

Be careful with the RAIDED drives. If you are doing HD in the Canopus HQ codec a single SATA II drive can handle up to 3 or 4 streams of video even in the HQ codec. If you are doing projects bigger than that then a RAID is good. I have built a couple of RAIDs the past few years and both times flaky things happened so I un-RAIDED before I lost everything. Now those same drives are running with no problems and I have seen no change in performance.

I usually edit weddings with 3-4 camera streams and do just fine with single SATA drives. I just thought I would mention that a RAID is overkill unless you edit bigger projects than 3-4 streams.

By nature RAIDs are not the most stable and reliable storage solution. If you do go RAID make sure to have backup drives big enough to back up all your video files. If you don't it will crash for sure.

Philip - Thats a good point ! I had forgotten a while back a videographer I know had a similar problem with a 2tb raid and lost over a months work!

OK so you say that single drives are good enough for 4 STREAMS ??

What about with slowmo pip and 3d pip???
