  • Edius Blu-Ray vs Vimeo VOD

I have an HD 1920x1080 30P project that I made a blu-ray disc from using the "burn to disk" feature in Edius. I also made an H264 QT file from the timeline (15Mbps data rate).

I compared the two on my 55in HD TV - the edius disc played from a blu-ray player and the H264 file was uploaded to Vimeo then played out on my TV via a wireless Roku box through Vimeo on Demand. The H264 file looked a lot better.

Not sure why the H264 file looked better, actually looked great. The edius BR burn looked pixelated in the fine detail - not bad but not as good as the H264 file.

My project settings were ESX-E1 HD 1920x1080 29.97p over 59.94i to edit the project. Then I changed them to 59.94i to get the "burn to disc" option. The average bit rate was 22Mbs CBR since it was only a 53 min video. I would have thought the higher bit rate would look better. Any thoughts on this?

What codec did you use for the bluray?

the timeline was Canopus HQ. The "burn to disc" didn't give me an option - I'm using 5.51.

When doing Mpeg 2 BD's, I never go below 30k. Since I use TMW 5, I can do dual pass to help.
H.264 can give higher quality at lower bitrates as compared to Mpeg 2.
The drawback is the amount of time it takes to create the file.
If you intend on using Mpeg 2, make sure to adjust the bitrate no lower than 30k.

Jerry, the highest bit rate I can "burn to disc" from the timeline in Edius 5.51 is 22Mbps. Not option to pick a codec either - not sure what it picks. I didn't want to mess with authoring the BD so the direct "burn to disc" from timeline looked like the way to go here. Maybe I should try exporting to a BD compliant file and then burning with another tool.

Ok, so you are using mpeg2 for BD. Aside from temporal differences with progressive and progressive over interlaced, the main difference you will be seeing is the difference between the codecs.

What I find quite strange is that your vimeo stream is still better than your BD. Unless things have changed, vimeo re encodes your upload file, which means your 15mb h264 will be getting further compressed by Vimeo. Whatever this end result is after your Edius h264 to vimeo h264, it should not be better than a Edius MPEG2 encode, even at only 22Mb. Try looking at your MPEG settings for your output, make sure they are on best settings.

Seeing as you don't mind authoring outside of Edius, you may want to try this workflow http://forum.grassvalley.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=31880 This will produce the best Bluray h264 stream you can get, plus the multiplexing of the same stream and an audio stream, will give you the best mp4 that you can get, which will also be a brilliant source for Vimeo or many other uses.

The order of TABS is different in 5.5 but the selection is the same allowing adjustment of the bit rate for both H264 and mpeg
For Bluray I use mpeg VBR 27Mb Ave Max 35Mb and the quality is superb
Better even if done expernally from a HQ file using VMW5 2 pass and Authorworks 5, same bit rates, Edius is only single pass and can if the bit rate is too low give artifacts on Xfades and fast movement
From Memory the default for Edius is H264 and mpeg CBR 22mb, great for H264 but too low for mpeg especially if CBR
Also make sure you change the Audio to Dolby AC3

Edius 5x has only h.264via the burn to disc from time line option and not mpeg2. The AVC engine in Edius 5x is quite poor and so it is no surprise that your apple qt h.264 export looks better even at 15Mbps especially if multipass encoding was selected. Not sure what the Vimeo on demand service requires for input but it may except certain parameters and codecs without recode as it is a different service to standard Vimeo plus and pro. Though I am really not sure on their vod service it could explain the differences your seeing.
