  • Use of Graphic Cards TV Out to Preview

I was wondering if i use my graphics card TV out (ATI RX 800) would i be able to preview the timeline from edius to a TV monitor? If yes will the colors be the "real" or will it be "something else". Do i need something like ADVC? Thank you

I have tested my ATI X800XL video-out in theater mode and it does a good job when you are using OHCI SD/HD. During playback with OHCI HD the playback is only as good as the overlay so if the overlay gets a bit choppy so will the output. I consider the X800XL video-out as a "poor" man's HD out as the audio is coming from your sound card which may have AV sync issues during playback. If you are looking for "True" or real life video out with perfect AV sync get the NX card and don't look back it's the BEST option for Edius editing.

I'm still editing in SD/DV with my DVStorm2 with component-out to my HDTV 720p monitor and it's the BEST way to edit with perfect timeline sync with "True" colors, OHCI/X800XL doesn't cut it for me and it doesn't perform the same compared to my DVStorm2. If I get into HD the NX will be my upgrade path.

Also, ADVC has to buffer the DV data so the output isn't in perfect sync with the timeline during editing.

      Hi Angelo,

I have an ATI Radion X800XT, will I be able to output my OHCI stuff with that card?

      Thanks

        Hey Angelo,

Maybe you know something I don't. You stated you're "still editing in SD/DV with my DVStorm2 with component-out to my HDTV 720p". How do you get component out of the DVStorm2 card? Or did you perhaps mean composite? Thanks,

I think the last DVStarm had a component out module....

So to sum up. If there is not adequate budget for a NX card at the moment (i have a DVStorm on my old machine and the preview i have is perfect) how can i use TV out so as to have preview to a TV??? Itried that and whats in the monitor is on the TV too. How can i have only the footage to my TV? TVout comparable to ADVC or ACDVIO? i dont care so much about sync i want the monitor only for color correction.
Sorry for my english and thank you

You can't make your video card TV-Out do anything but what it is doing. It's designed to send your full screen image out to a TV device. Its most useful for creating a demo video tape to show how some particular process is accomplished on the computer, or to display that information live to an audience watching it on a TV screen. Buy an ACEDVio card to do what you want. It's inexpensive and works very well, but it does run about 1 second behind the actual timeline position.

Modern graphics hardware can usually duplicate the overlay preview to full-screen TV out but... (keep reading)

...for color correction, the duplicated overlay preview is not guaranteed to be accurate, likely will not be accurate. For accurate color correction, you need hardware that either decodes the DV output to analog (like ACEDVio), or sends the pre-DV-compressed video to the monitor (like EDIUS NX).

Yes, you can use it for OHCI SD or HD projects. But like Brandon says there are limitation compared to the NX.

If you are currently editing with OHCI SD or HD with no optional analog external monitor having use of the X800 video-out is a nice step-up from only having a windowed overlay.

I couple of years I called Canopus USA sales about the optional DVStorm2 Component-Out board and at the time I bought the last one from service/support. The DVStorm2 Component-Out board only outputs 480i via (3-cable) RGB component. But the video resolution is better than just the S-Video-Out.

If you want the component-out board it was only sold with the "DVStorm2 Pro" series that you "may" find on ebay.

I guess you want to try full overlay on your external analog monitor (or TV) with X800 video-out.
                    - set your TV in clone mode in the ATI driver Displays tab
                    - goto ATI's driver Overlay tab setting and select the "Theater mode options", change overly display mode to Theater Mode and change Theater Mode setting to "Full screen video".

Now all your overlay will be shown in full screen on your TV or external analog monitor.

If you are unable to change overlay setting just start playing an avi file with WMP and this will allow you to change/adjust the overlay settings. Also in the ATI driver Options tab select WMV acceleration.

                        Hi again Angelo.

I also have a DV Storm 2 onboard and when I am editing HDV which has been captured via my OHCI input, I can edit the HD footage then if I change the App output settings to DV Storm2 I can see the results on my external flat panel TV, albeit only in SD, but at least I can monitor that way.

I asked the question to see if monitoring via the X800 TV out would be any better that through the Storm?

                        Thanks.

                        Gordon.

Editing with the DVStorm is better than OHCI SD, IMO. I didn't go into any great details with OHCI HD and X800 video-out other than I was getting full screen overlay.

So you edit in SD then switch to OHCI HD to output. I guess you redo/check your titling and 3DPIP alignment for HD too?

                            Hi Angelo,

No, I do it the other way around, edit in HD then output in SD. If I change the output setting s to DV Storm RT I can see the output (in SD) on my external monitor. All I was wondering was if the X800 output via the TV out was better that the Storm output.

                            Gordon.

The DVStorm will not output anything during HD editing, therefore "any" output to a external monitor is better and I would use the X800 video-out for OHCI HD editing.
