  • Graphic cards with Edius4.52 and Storm2

My current PCI graphic card, an ATI 128MB DDR Radeon 9800 Pro, is on the blink (severe vertical banding) and unusable for editing - tho not for this post). It is also a discontinued product. The nearest ATI replacement appears to be the ATI Radeon X1300 Pro. The new card will install in my Dell 8300 with 3.0Ghz P4 running on XP_SP2.

Does anyone use and recommend this card or is able to suggest an alternative, which will handle DV satisfactorily, until I take the plunge into multicore processors and AVCHD.

I tested an X1650 with my system an it works, just the hardware overlay setting in Edius will have to change from "none" to "Update Overlay". The X1300 is the same family as the X1650 so you shouldn't have a problem.

Thanks for that reply. I see that the 1300 is a PCI Express x16 bus, whereas I have the older PCI bus. Presumably these cards are backwards compatible and will fit my slot? The specs say it offers dynamic voltage control so I do not have to worry about 5v vs 3.3v issues?

Meantime my son says he has an old Radeon 9700XT which can be cannibalised for my use. As StormDave has the 9600XT listed in his specs that should also be a sound choice!

You don't have a agp slot on board?, most of the time if a board had built in graphics it still had a agp slot.

You are right - I do have the agp slot. I was confused as I have never changed a graphics card before and kept seeing references to PCIe on the card specs.

My old card started to behave itself for a few days but then the vertical banding problem returned. Have now replaced it with an agp version of the ATI Sapphire X1650Pro.
