Codec HELP

Ok.......I have installed Edius 4 I was previously using 3

I installed 4 on another computer since 3 is working great didn't want to touch it since it was working and always scared to upgrade just for what has happened..so here is problem

the Codecs Canopus DV and Canopus Loseless

they only work on computer I installed Edius 4 on and u have to have dongle plugged in to get them to work.....I use them in Virtualdub...sooo I want to do some work on 3 other computers preping footage to edit together in Edius or put directly into ProCoder but now I can't use the codes unless I go around plugging in the donlge to the computer I want to use the 2 codecs on??? This was not a problem with 3, I installed 3 on the computer just to get the codecs and then remove edius 3 but now I can't do this with 4??? any ideas??

Any ideas? Yes! Go and download the Canopus Playback Codec Pack from our web site.

This should get you decoding capability on any system, with no need for dongles or EDIUS to be on the machine.

That's assuming you don't want to encode to those codecs as well. In which case, there's no solution - we don't hand out our codecs for free..

ok i did that.......and I open virtualdub and they show up but they won't work until you plug dongle in :( I had no problem with edius 3?? its not like I haven't paid for everthing I ever bought from Canoupus I'm very happy with their products.......I just think I should be able to use a codec on another computer to encode a file using it??

Are you wanting to decode only on other systems or decode and encode?

Encode requires a dongle (and software).

Decoding shouldn't require a dongle with the codec pack, unless you've got EDIUS software already installed - that's the catch.

i am encoding with virtualdub.......like I said preparing files to put in edius and edit on timeline......so the problem is when I had edius 3 the DV and loseless codec didn't need a dongle now when I download the codecpack it requires dongle to use virtualdub to encode file using these codecs??? why??? edius 3 did not do this? why should I have to use a dongle just to use canopus codec???

If I'm editing DV, I find Edius will work as well with the Microsoft codec.

Because you are basically trying to use the liscense for Edius in a way that is against their requirements. The reason you were able to do it in E3 is that you must have activated it on more then the one machine. Considering that the Edius liscense requires that it not be used on more then one machine at a time, the dongle is no different if you are operating within their legal parameters.

ok........so if I want to use the canopus dv or loseless codec I have to buy another copy of edius 4? It seems like you could use there codecs?? I have paid for every program I bought from Canopus!

If you're using it on another machine simultaneously then yes, you need another license. Most software is like this. It's a single-user, single-instance license, even if it allows installation on more than one machine.

Have you noticed a difference when you export with microsoft DV ticked? Colours and contrast are different than if you use Canopus DV...

A while back I was told that the "Use MSDV codec" option simply tagged the resulting file as MSDV, but still used the Canopus DV codec for compression.

If that's still the case, then the encoded data should be the same, though the decoded result may vary due to what assumptions the decoder makes.

I still don't understand why you should restrict use of a codec??? isn't this a little extreme.....I buy your product because I think the quality is better then competitors....but you restrict me from using a simple codec (which I payed for) on another computer......not the software but the codec???? You should have the option to use it on another computer to encode clips!

Apple does not give away the ProRes422 codec either, you have to have Final Cut Studio 2 installed to be able to use it.

Decoders are understandable, but encoders can't be given out for free by GV or any other company creating proprietary codecs because those are for the NLE only.

The codec is considered part of EDIUS, therefore it is subject to the EDIUS license. There's a clause in there that essentially says you can't "part out" the software, similar to how you can't take Adobe's Creative Suite and (legally) install and use Photoshop on one machine while using Illustrator on another.

Now if there was a separate "codec pack" then you could do it, but that would be dongled/licensed somehow too.

Nope.

I mainly use it if I go to DVD Studio Pro. It handles MS.avi like any other, but not the Canopus CODEC. As I recall the Canopus CODEC was optimized to work with Rex/Storm hardware, and it did a dandy job at that.
