  • AVI file displays its own timecode...

    Hi,
I'm editing an uncompressed AVI file in edius 5 that displays its own timecode.
It's footage from a 16mm film transfer, created about 5 years ago.
The question is; can the timecode be removed or am I dealing with a burnt-in TCR recording?
I've tried ProCoder 3 but can't find a way to convert without the timecode.

It sounds like the timecode is part of the image so you need to crop it or cover it up. Do you see the timecode running when playing the file in Windows Media Player?

Yes, the timecode is there when playing in Windows Media Player.
Apparently the film transfer was done professionally so I'm surprised the timecode is a permanent part of the image. It's a large 4Gb file for about 90 seconds of footage.

Someone did a Window Burn T.C. on your video. You can't remove it. Well you could if you rotoscoped it frame by frame. Maybe you can place a banner or a bug on the video.

If you have a locked down shot, you can take one frame into Photoshop and clone the T.C. with surrounding background. Then place the cloned frame above your main video track and use an effect to place only the cloned area where the T.C. showed. I've fixed a few shots with that process.

Haven't done it recently, but I've done the same for video using the Region filter with a static Loop Slide effect.

I had fairly good results a few years ago using Virtual Dub and a filter called "logoaway". Getting into Virtual Dub and setting the filter up was a but of a pain compared to the other answers above however.

              Thanks for all the suggestions.
I'll try one of the workarounds in Edius first and failing that.. move onto Virtual Dub. Cheers!
