After Effects has a number of timers, clocks and random counters.

First select you layer you want to add the numbers to, open Effects and select text, then select numbers in the drop down menu.
Make sure you heve the Effects Control Panel open from "View" and select the style of numbers you need - you can set the start and end numbers of a "stopwatch" style counter, day and date, random numbers or timecode, and of course make them any font and size you want.

By the way the Help menu in AE is very useful, it contains masses of information, with pretty good keyword search too.
