  • Question about Grouping/Linking...

    Hi all,

I'm importing video (with camera-recorded audio) into a VA track and separately recorded audio into an A track.

I align them by comparing the waveforms.

For the video in the VA track, I understand that I can unlink the video from the audio.

But if I then move out the camera-recorded audio, and move the separately recorded audio into the VA track, I can't link it to the video. (I can only seem to link the original audio that I had unlinked.)

However, I can group the video to the separately recorded audio.

What is the functional difference between linking and grouping? Is it not possible to link video with separately recorded audio?

    Thanks!

Short answer: NO! (It is as it is - sorry)

You only can group it. Functionally there is no (significant) difference.

But if you want both - the video and the separately recorded audio - "linked" together you have to export the clip (HQ/HQX for example) and reimport it. Then you are again in a position to use Link/Unlink.

    Regards kurt

fwiw, I can find at least one little difference -- linked clips on a VA track ignore the global Link/Group Mode toggle button, whereas grouped clips on a VA track honor it.

Which reminds me of perhaps my #1 wish for Edius: being able to see the audio waveform in a nested sequence.

      Thanks, -Scott

Thats also one of my favorite wishes.

Precise: Functionally there is no (significant) difference ... in the sense how it could be moved etc. in the TL. (see my correction above)

linked clips on a VA track ignore the global Link/Group Mode toggle button ===>

        Only partial
correct: When concerning moving a VA-clip - you are right.
When concerning trimming only one part of a VA-clip (video OR audio) - that works! (For example if you want to make a J- or L-cut!)

        Regards kurt

I never use VA track, don't even have that track on my timeline, don't you guys like to have independent control of video and audio? with separated V and A track you can unlink/link them anytime you like.

            Hi:

I have worked very long with Premiere (pro) where there are no VA-tracks.
So I am really wondering why I have used VA-tracks in Edius since I work also with Edius - I dont know. But I am on a good way to your suggestion and use VA-tracks each day more less.
