  • Edius NX Express VS Matrox RT x2 Premiere

Just an observation that their forums appear to have a lot of people pulling their hair out trying to get that thing to work right. Some people are dead in the water, and others have problems that are more limited but nevertheless appear to be difficult to solve. In comparison NX Express appears quite stable and reliable. It seems that as long as you have the available slots, you've avoided the limited hardware known to have compatibility problems, your very likely going to be good to go, and once you have the system up and working it's usually highly reliable. In my book this really counts for a lot.

This is not 100% true. I had Matrox-100 and I know that it is nice system. It is bit of challenge to get a system compatable to work with Matrox, but if you got it- you're lucky. Yes, NX is more stable, but don't forget about a giant Adobe that standing behind the Matrox. Just imagine Premiere Pro, AfterEffects, Encore, SoundBooth etc. that working nice together and millions of plugins available for them from all the world... Think about a possibilities, about what can you create with such a system.
I wish that Edius will have a "brother"- composer to work together and it will have at least 10% plugins that you can chouse for Adobe system.
I love Edius, but I am able to see that there are many other things arrownd with their own pluses and minuses. And I wish GV to get some good things to Edius that can blow our creative minds...:)

      RE:Premiere Options?

Yes, I understand advantages of Premiere, and of Premiere with RT X2. Just seems like there are a lot of people struggling to get it going right, and at this point that's not for me. I've been there and done that. I'm getting too old and don't have enough time to be up at 3 in the morning formating my hard drive and rebuilding my setup for the second time to get a $1400 PCI card and software to work right. . . no thanks.

What about something like the Black Magic Design Decklink HD Extreme card (Cost about $1,000) It works with Premiere. It does uncompressed HD and SD and outputs to monitor. You just need a big and really fast raid array.

I agree. If you are to go the Premiere route then you should go uncompressed. You will need to spend up on HDD and RAID card but the end result will be better. Of course few projects require uncompressed compositing quality which is where EDIUS lives and breathes. Why not have both options!!

I don't require uncompressed, and I think the Edius is good for me. From what I understand the Decklink uncompressed also is beneficial to use for burning anything to DVD, internet streaming, and incorporating graphic files into your timeline. I wonder what kind of real time you get with uncompressed in Premiere and a Quad Core 3.0 1333mhz? I think as far as minimum drive requirements you have to go with something like at least four SATA 3 drives in raid. Right now I have a 1TB G-TECH ESATA that has two 500g Hitachi drives in software raid 0. For uncompressed I'd buy a second G-TECH 1TB ESATA and a hardware raid card that has four esata connectors. So I'd have 2TB with four drives in hardware raid. I think that'd be adequate for uncompressed SD and HD?

I do not share your opinion, EDIUS NX EXPRESS in yield and reliability is highly superior to a card Matrox RTX-2, you I to it say that sometimes I buy a publishing card indeed matrox the RTX-100 that with time I realized that in yield, quality, stability and utility of codecs; an example of it is codec Canopus HQ that supports to video alpha 32 bit that can use it in software of third e to in time concern it in EDIUS with reproduction real thing that codecs of matrox does not have that utility; without a doubt the publishing cards of Canopus-Grass Valley him take it of distant spot matrox…

In my case I dedicate myself to the Production of Commercial of TV in PERU, EDIUS BROADCAST 4 has guaranteed a serious and professional work to me that podria not to obtain with Premiere pro due to the limitation of support of formats, to the instability of the Premiere, the constant to render that it requests in spite of having a publishing card like matrox RTX-100, and to the low quality of codecs that Premiere uses; in those aspects the Canopus products fulfill my expectations that I request in a serious software and professional with the purpose of which serves to me as base to operate my creativity to the maximum,

I am in agreement with you who EDIUS it needs a brother who by the way deberia to be IMAGINATE, but for that reason not you these tied of feet and hands in using other software to complement your edition work; for it you can use Combustion, Boris RED 4, Vitascene, Particle, Cinema 4D, etc… so no software is always born orphaned are several complements that you can use with EDIUS; this phrase I said in another Forum SOFTWARE to it DOES NOT GENERATE the CREATIVITY, BUT WE OURSELF WE GENERATED the CREATIVITY

Edius is a new software and this demonstrating to be a serious and professional software which we can trust different thing happens to Premiere pro that is not a good product of Marinates as if it is it After Effects and Photoshop for example; although Premiere pro has plugins, Edius enough also has plugins sufficient to be creative… as I said the single Creativity to it depends on we ourself not of software… TOTAL GREETINGS

It's much younger than Premiere...but then again Premiere Pro 1 was a completely new version of Premiere...

I love Premiere Pro, really I do, more so than edius in some cases. I thought to myself (about a year ago) I want Premiere to be real time on my p4 duo, so what do i need to buy? After some, research I went and purchased a a brand new Matrox RTX 100 pro package (with all the software) came home installed it all and was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO dissapointed.

I put in E-bay that day, and sold it for $350 less.

It crashed. It made pp sluggish and yuck to work with. It scattered crap all over my hard drive (which I still can't remove). And, the tech support was aweful, if at all. (no offence to the tech guys there...ahem.....tech guy there)
And when Matrox say "real time" they mean "a real long time" or "fake time"...

Thats just me....and remember, I LOVE Premiere Pro, but only if its real-time.

Then came along edius NX. Nuf said :)
When I go out, I wear my EDIUS T-Shirt.

NX is just an I/O card...unlike most of Matrox's stuff. They usually use plugins for Premiere and it is attached to the hardware.

I had an RTX100 too, it was garbage (literally). I can't say anything about RTX2 because I have never owned it, but I wouldn't be surprised it if has hardware limitations and problems like it's previous versions.

I would think that the need for hardware exceleration for better realtime and for rendering when necessary is becoming far less of a factor. Processing power is really taking leaps. In a few months Penryn processors will be available. They'll have higher default clock speeds than the current quad core, and will be on the 1333 bus, they'll have new instructions, and other improvements. They'll also be 45-nanometer. I think the processing power is pretty much there it's mostly a matter of the software taking increasing advantage of it. Look at Edius, you really only need hardware sitting in your PCI slots mostly for IO and to give you various functional improvements. In six months you could have a quad core running at 4.0 on a 1333 bus with blazingly fast DDR3. If you need to render or want to render something it's going to be pretty quick even for HD. The RT X2 is huge. I think it's the biggest PCI card I've ever seen. I think it will only fit in a full tower. It also reportedly gets very hot. I'm sure there are some people who have it running pretty well and sing it's praises, but I think there's a lot of people who have significant problems with it. It's seems to be very picky about your hardware configuration. I think much more so than the NX card. Frankly the thing scares me, and I decided to stay away from it. In about 3 weeks I'll have Edius NX Express running on a 3.0 quad core with 1333 bus and DDR3 1600. . . Halleluyah! I happen to have Premiere CS3. A few months ago I fell for the inexpensive upgrade from 1.5. I still don't think it's as stable as Edius, but it seems better than most of the previous versions of Premiere. You can get pretty good realtime in it, but you better have one of the latest fastest processors. You also need something else to give you the external monitoring and playback of the timeline, and perhaps some of the other kinds of functionality that the NX gives you in Edius. This is where the trouble begins. The Black Magic Decklink cards or Mulibridge look pretty good. They do somethings better than the NX, some things that the NX doesn't do, somethings the NX does that they don't do??? And I don't have that good a sense of how stable and reliably they work with Premiere in the so called real world. I think the Decklink is even more purely an IO card than the NX, the Multibridge I think is an awesome external IO box that connects to your PCI slot through a little adapter card. I think the Multibridge also does realtime format conversion. With these cards you can work with uncompressed SDI if you have one heck of a disk system that'll cost you at least $2 or $3 thousand, or you can work with their codec in Premiere that seems a lot like Canopus HQ. Anyway I could go on and on. . . enough already.
