  • converting NTSC to Pal

I did a search but didn't find anything . . . and was wondering if the latest version of Edius can convert NTSC to Pal and if so how long it takes? Thanks.

There are many ways of doing this in EDIUS.

1 you can just make a pal project and drop your ntsc footage and it will play out as pal immediately in realtime (without any rendering)

2 You can use pce to export to pal from the ntsc timeline

3 you can use pce in stand alone mode and do the conversion there.

Ah, I must be getting old. I see that NTSC/PAL conversion window come up everytime when I export with PCE. I go through it so fast it just didn't click in my head. I have a number of clients in Europe that like to screen footage but need to view it in PAL. Now all I need is a delivery medium as all my recording decks are NTSC. The best option I can think of is standard DVD but only 18 minutes of SD video would be possible. Unless I'm missing something again. :)

Not sure what you mean by this?

A standard mpeg2 PAL dvd will hold hours of video if you take the compression right down and use ac3 audio, even at best quality you can get an hour plus on. When you come to authoring the dvd, you choose PAL settings at the outset and a PAL dvd will be what is burned.

Or are you thinking of putting a dv.avi file onto a data dvd for playing on a pc?

If this is a frequent thing you should look at a dsr 11. It plays and records ntsc and pal.

Or better a HVR 15 which does Pal/ntsc dv/dvcam and HDV

Thanks Support and Skier-Hughes. For this time I will encode to timecoded mpeg2 at 5000kbps and put on a DVD for viewing on a pc. That should give me well over an hour of video. I'll check out the DSR 11 and HVR-15 too as they would make it easier and I need a new deck anyway.

I see where the HVR 15 has a 60Hz/50Hz Switch for NTSC and PAL switchability. Does that mean you can input a 60Hz power source and get it to record a PAL signal from Edius? In the specs I didn't find an answer.

                Hvr-m15

I'm looking at my HVR-M15N right now. There is a DC input only. Really nice, you can use it in the field with a 12V supply. I don't see a 50z/60z switch on the outside because it's DC only. Maybe you saw it in the menu.

I'm NTSC. Just finished editing PAL minDV's. The SVR-M15 auto switches play-back from NTSC or PAL tapes. For recording, you just switch in the menu. Really a great deck. Outputed the PAL timeline to NTSC with Procoder, looks
                good.

Thanks! It's also a field unit. That explains the DC input. There is a AC/DC converter supplied with it like my old GVD-900 (that is still working!) The HVR-15 sounds like the deck for me. I like all different outputs on the back too. Thanks everyone for pointing me in the right direction.
