OK Im back after hours of testing.
I have copied an entire folder of clips to two other computers and they play all the clips fine. One system is running Edius 6.02 and my laptop that has 6.52 only for test purposes.
I removed one of my Geforce GTX660 and did the following.
I formatted my entire pc, installed windows and all the standard drivers that came with the hardware. I installed Edius 6.02 tried to play buffer issue still there, then I followed the instructions from Antons PDF’s for system setup and win 7 specs first and still had the buffer issue, I reformatted again and installed Edius 6.52 only installed the drivers for hardware. Tried to play the timeline. Still buffer issues, then again I followed the instructions from Antons PDF’s for system setup and win 7 specs played the files in 6.52 still the buffer issue.
Then I upgraded my Graphic cards driver and Software to 314.07 I have even turned all my Geforce setting to performance. Played the footage and I got inconsistent results. The first few time the buffer dropped down to 8 but it didn’t stop so I took it as a positive. Then I rebooted and added a single track of footage less than 40seconds of playing the buffer dropped down to 1 again.
What do I do as its clearly not my files as they play on other machines.
Does anybody have radeon graphic cards as I’m seriously considering buying one. It’s the only thing I put it down to, the cards are the only hardware changes that would affect the buffer.
Any help will be more than appreciated.i7 CPU 3960X, 32Gb DDR4 Ram, Win7 64bit,1x SSD Kingston HyperX, 2x 4.0TB Riad 0 Sata 3 Caviar Black Drives, 2x Geforce GTX660 Graphic Cards, 3 24inch 1920x1080 LCD Screens

Did you run a memory test on your ram? You could try removing all but 1 stick of your ram and see if it plays with that. If it plays, Then it could be a ram stick has gone bad. If it doesn't, try another stick.Jerry

I tried only 2 sticks and still the buffer drops to zero.
I tried a few different combinations.
Would i be heading in the wrong direction in thinking the mother board might be the issue?i7 CPU 3960X, 32Gb DDR4 Ram, Win7 64bit,1x SSD Kingston HyperX, 2x 4.0TB Riad 0 Sata 3 Caviar Black Drives, 2x Geforce GTX660 Graphic Cards, 3 24inch 1920x1080 LCD Screens

I've been running a Radeon card for the last 3 years (and now with Edius 6.52 with Windows 8) and I haven't had any problems. And it's an older card only one gig.Jeff Chandler

If this gives you a better picture.
I managed to borrow a few parts from a friend.
I ran a Radeon 6990 still had the low buffer problem,
I also used his Corsair vengeance ran 8gb then 16gb and still the same problem.
I’m current backing up the drives. I’m going to try playing the footage off a USB3 hard drive to see if the drives are performing slowly.
I can’t think of any other test for hardware, I have changed all hardware except for the board and cpu, I have done some research and on a few websites they mention if the PC auto restarts randomly or crashes it’s probably the board, It has done it a hand full of times in the last two months so maybe the board isn't up to it anymore.i7 CPU 3960X, 32Gb DDR4 Ram, Win7 64bit,1x SSD Kingston HyperX, 2x 4.0TB Riad 0 Sata 3 Caviar Black Drives, 2x Geforce GTX660 Graphic Cards, 3 24inch 1920x1080 LCD Screens

back to PC trouble shooting
I would start with system information/components/problem devices
I would also make sure that the intel driver detection utility finds no newer mobo drivers, if yes, update themAnton Strauss

I have been on it all day,
What is the difference between a QT File and a QuickTime Video (avc1) file?
I have changed my motherboard, and I’m re-configuring everything at the moment, should be able to test it with in 2hrs.i7 CPU 3960X, 32Gb DDR4 Ram, Win7 64bit,1x SSD Kingston HyperX, 2x 4.0TB Riad 0 Sata 3 Caviar Black Drives, 2x Geforce GTX660 Graphic Cards, 3 24inch 1920x1080 LCD Screens

Jove,
Sounds like you've tried everything - but..... I had this problem ONCE, about 2 years ago. One of the guys suggested I take a look at the Layouter. For some unknown reason, my computer was changing ALL LAYOUTERS on the system to a -1 (minus 1) in one of the offset settings. Never knew why, but when I saw it, I changed the "default" back to "0", copied the correct Layouter setting to ALL Layouters on the timeline at once, and the buffers stayed steady.
Slim chance this is happening to you - but I thought I'd just mention it.
