Disc Capture issues

I've searched and tried all the suggestions in that search to no avail. I am trying to capture a dvd of a friends raft trip and things just aren't working the way I think they should. Should I not be able to take this to the timeline? I just need to be able to duplicate it for him, no editing. When I just capture and import the mpeg file I get no audio and see only green unless I scrub the timeline. I tried to export as avi and all I got was one frame the length of the entire dvd. I also tried to open PCE an capture using that and it did not work either.

Suggestions more than welcome.

My captured just fine, version 4.51c, but if you just want to duplicate, just go to your burning program and hit copy, it will copy the disc to your hard drive then it will tell you to put a blank disc in and it will burn.

For just copying (assuming it's not protected), ImgBurn should be able to do it.

I had exactly the same problem,
and i need to edit the mpeg footage slightly...!

I am working with 4.51c, but the "issue" works exactly the same...i spent several hours to find a way in Edius, but it simly came out without any audio..!

Is this a known problem?
And even more important: is there a work-around?

Maybe people can suggest a 3rd party-free tool that i can use to capture the DVD(it has no copyright issues or anything like that..) that i can finally edit the footage in Edius??!

I also had Edius freezing a couple of times when i put the (edius-)captured files on TL, i dont think that this is the way its supposed to be...!?

I am aware of the fact the the GOP-structure of Mpeg doesnt give any efforts to be edited, but still it must be possible somehow...!??

I find if I 'rip' a DVD using Diskcapture that has AC3 audio I have the problems mentioned above.

My workaround is to demultiplex the ripped M2P file, I use TMPEG, to an .M2V and AC3 file. I then decode the AC3 file to a WAV file. I use Softencode, an old EOLed Sonic Foundry program, to convert the AC3 file to WAV. There must be other programs out there that will do it - I just don't know of any off hand (Vegas probably). I realise that Edius should be able to do this conversion from AC3 to WAV, but there seems to something about the ripped AC3 files from DVD's, especially lengthy ones, that upsets Edius. Haven't tried ripping a DVD with AC3 audio that was created in Edius to see if this causes the same problem.

I then bring the resulting M2V and WAV files into Edius for editing. An extra step or two, but not too time consuming with today's CPU's.

Although, and I can now do it within Edius, I still find it helpful to convert the AC3 file to a WAV file as on my old Dual 2.4 Xeon/RT2 MAX system there is approximately a 10 frame lag between video and audio that doesn't occur with a WAV file. I haven't tried this on my SP system at work so I don't know if this sync issue applies on newer/more powerful systems.

Hard to say. The PTS flags determine when a particular frame should appear time-wise. With the flags, a stream can be missing frames and still stay in-sync, because the frames that are there are played at the proper point in time.

Without using the (DTS and) PTS flags, the player just has to "assume" there are the correct number of frames, so if there are missing or extra frames, the sync may go out.

It just seems that this system takes 10 frames longer to process AC3 audio than the exported WAV, as both files waveforms lines up exactly. When played together though there is an echo, with the AC3 lagging by 10 frames. I forgot to mention that this system is running 4.24 so things may have changed with AC3 in 4.5x.

Should (hopefully) be better in v4.5 with its native AC3 decoding, but at least the delay is constant.

Hello Folks...

Unfortunatly i am still depressed with Edius and the try to edit some DVD-footage: i tried all kind of ways:

a) disc capture (also with the plugin setting changed!) in Edius:
Clip ends up being displayed only 23 minutes out of 90 (even the filesize is recognized at 4GB...) and there is no sound at the end...!

b) i used different 3rd party tools that were recommended by users here, but using dvddecrypter or "DVD2AVI" doesnt help me in the end: The vobs come out fine, perfect length and sound.
Then i do rename them to mpegs and Edius allows me to import and put em on the timeline.
But when i try edititng, only a green display is shown, or sometimes pictures...sounds seems to play fine..but i cant edit this way...!
What makes it totally important to work this way is the fact that edius freezes from time to time(sometimes even crashes...) so there is no real fun doing work like that..!

So my question: is there any solution that works in any case,
is the disc-capture function in Edius (still with 4.51c, no idea if 4.52 changed anything..!??) a "known issue" GV???
