  • Sony EX-1

The soon to be released Sony EX-1 is on my list and I have a few questions.
I think Brandon mentioned that GV had one in their booth and working with Edius?
Will Edius load the native EX-1 files < I think it uses a mp4 wrapper > or will they need to be converted to MXF or HQ? >

If Edius does load the native EX-1 files, what kind of RT performance can we
expect? < full raster 1920x1080 may kill the nice HQ multilayer performance that we are used to. >

And lastly, can anyone recomend either a laptop or system specs that would
    be needed for workflow?
    Thanks

XDCAM EX support is slated for a (near) future EDIUS update.
It was working in Sony's demonstration.
As I understand it, the workflow is very similar to current XDCAM workflow in EDIUS.

It looked almost exactly like current XDCAM workflow at IBC BUT it is not quite finished yet :)

thanks guys.... but what about RT performance? full raster in a format other than Canopus HQ might limit us to only 1 maybe 2 layers, and mega prebuffering before playback even on powerboxes! The current workflow for the EX-1 seems to be:
Drag and drop the native files which are wrapped as mp4's < not currently read in Eduis >
OR copy and convert to MXF via Sony's Clip Browser sw that will ship with the camera.
Either way, the added resolution and compression seems to scream max CPU usage!
I wonder if converting to CanopusHQ will be something we must think about?

          DD,
          Can you say "Proxy?"
I know I'd like to for this camera!
          Background conversion would be great!

            Sony XDCAM EX – PMW-EX1

This weekend during a Same-Day Edit we got the opportunity to use a Sony HVRDR60. Needless to say I was fairly floored by the performance of the unit and impressed that it recorded DV and HDV simultaneously! 25 min. of DV (.avi) transfered in <5 min.! The downside of this drive appears to be that it is FAT32, and divides files. While I don't think we encountered this last Sat., it may be an issue in the future!

            Back on topic...
While I'm not the biggest fan of Sony, I work in SonyLand every day and because of what I'm hearing about this camera I'm very tempted to spring for one.

Does anyone know the current state of Edius working with these cameras and a workflow? I'm mostly interested in the functionality for Same-Day Edits. Perhaps a link to GV info would be helpful.

            Thanks, Rusty

It has been stated numerous times, that EX support is currently being worked on and is expected to be released within the next major 4.x point release.

                Thanks Kenneally,

I'd like to get one of these in Q1 '08.

But I'd like to familiarize myself with the XDCAM work flow and see if my systems are up to snuff. Unfortunately, the GV website shows XDCAM support, but comes up short on the work flow end. (Unless I missed something)

                Thanks for the help.

From what I recall at IBC (where we ran a prototype EX module), import/export is done via a tool modelled off our existing XDCAM Select application.

The actual editing side of things is the same as always.

I hope the developers don't implement the bit where the tool always starts up when Edius is launched unless you rename the executable...

To be honest, I have absolutely no idea what the final product will be like, behaviour-wise.

The reason why P2 and XD Select run automatically in the background is to enable the background transfer.

I do agree that there should be an option to disable this behavior.

                          <rant>
I've never seen P2 Select start automatically, and I actually use that every time because I have a Panasonic HVX200 -- P2 Select doesn't appear in the System Tray until I run it from the Capture menu. If I work on an existing project and don't capture new material into it, then P2 Select doesn't start.

XD Select on the other hand always wants to start as soon as I open Edius: Lame with a capital L! I'm a software engineer by trade and would be embarrased by something like that -- I'd like to slap my colleague in Japan upside the head with a sliderule!

Not sure what to say there.
My P2 Select starts up sometimes. I can't quite figure the rhyme or reason tho.
                            My XD Select always starts.

I'm sure there's a reason whether or not it makes sense in the mind of the observer.

I sure hope Eduis can read these New Sony files or at least the converted MXF files.
The camera will come with transfer/browser software that lets you transfer native < mp4 wrapped files > or convert to MXF wrapped files.
I have tried loading a native file from the Ex-1 < mp4 wrapped > and Eduis will NOT load/play the file.
I have a camera ordered and hope a Eduis update will be soon.
