  • Dissolves in 6.52

    Hi all
Have been editing a 2 hour video over the last few months, just upgraded to the new version 6.52 from 6..., now I find that every dissolve and virtually every clip transition has to be redone, as the new version will not play back the old transitions correctly. I guess more fool me for doing the upgrade before the project was finished, but who would have expected this? There are some good features in 6.52, but the transition problem gets the big thumbs down from me!

Upgrading in the middle of a project is a no no. Always finish
    your project first.

So why are customers told that 6.0x projects load fine in 6.5x anyway?

          ...because all rules have exceptions...

In some cases there may be some (perceived) necessary feature or fix in the new version, and the user may determine that upgrading mid-project is an acceptable risk.

Sure but Grass Valley even made it posible to finish 6.0x projects which contain a 3D PiP in 6.5x. So this doesn't look like a no no to me. There are various threads here where moderators explain that opening is possible. Therefore I find Jerry's answer a bit confusing.

Were they native EDIUS 6.0x transitions, or third party plug-in transitions (that may or may not have been bundled with the earlier EDIUS)?

Do not confuse my opinions with that of GV's. I am not a moderator and I don't work for the company. So, if you are thinking that what I say is what GV is saying....you are way off the mark.

My comments/suggestions are from one user to another. You can take the information or ignore it.

But, in my experience with editing programs and software in general and the quirks of updating or upgrading, it is best for your sanity, and safety of a project to refrain from doing anything to your system until after you have finished your current project. Even though there may be new features in the new version, finishing the project in a cost effective and timely manner is more important to me as an editor. Updates can wait until the next project. For me, it is just common sense. I am not a thrill seeker when it comes to possibly increasing my work time.
(This is unless of course you have completely backed up your entire system and all drives.)

Even though updating with a current project on the timeline is possible, there are those occasions when it might not work perfectly. There are too many variations of systems through out the world to predict that an update will work perfectly on each system.
But look at the update in question...it is more of an upgrade. You are going from 6.x to 6.52. Going from 6.5 to 6.51 is easy enough. But remember, going from 6.51 to 6.52 you lost the use of Izotope plugins. So, if you had your audio tweaked with Izotope and you didn't read the release notes, you had to spend extra time fixing the audio. How many users actually read the release notes?

How many working editors are willing to take a risk like that. There are exceptions and it is your choice.
I just choose to be safe.
I would ask the OP if he would do it again.

I can find only one problem with transitions going from 6 to 6.5 and it is only if there are complicated keyframes, standard dissolve and even all the GPU transitions I have just tested work without a problem

I have one cross wipe that reveals each letter in turn using keyframes that needs re setting the rest OK, in 6.5 it reverts to a standard xwipe but the keyframes are still there
I have 6.08 on my laptop so it is easy to check
I don't have newblue on the laptop so may be it is a third party problem

What is the exact problem you are having
