AC3 audio not coming in with AVI file

I am adding a video file to my bin (AVI video made with an xvid video codec and AC3 Audio codec). The audio doesn't show up at all, there is no audio tab when I display the properties of the file, and no audio on the timeline when I add it there.
The video is coming from a Sage TV recording. I am setting up a work flow for future projects and don't really want to transcode this video every time I need to bring it into an Edius project.
Can someone suggest on option?

Do you have an AC3 decoder installed on your system?

No, I don't think so. What AC3 decoders work best with Edius 6.4 and how are they installed?

Well, it can't do anything with audio it doesn't understand. :)
