  • Still images & Layouter

    Hi,

On a 1080-24p project I'm doing a sort of Ken Burn effect on a large nautical chart.
The chart is rotated on its axis via the layouter 3d function giving a flycam effect. I already done things like this several times but on this particular still image I cannot get rid of a strong aliasing and flickering. I'm going mad.

Then I came across on this thread:

Is it still unresolved on 6.08?

To be able to tilt the image on the X axis giving a sense of perspective I need to use large files. I'm using a 9500 x 7000 300dpi jpeg image. Should I try with a tiff? Or Is there something else that I could try?

    Thank you in advance

The Flickering will be caused by the 24"P" project, the only way around that is to slooooow the movement down
Just because the movies shoot at 24 frames does not mean it will work on video, film projectors show each frame 3 to 7 times which tricks the eye into perceiving smooth movement that is why hi quality TV's have up to 300hz refresh rate which shows each frame up to 12 times but is only a help
Some TV's show this in their menu as "Smooth Motion" low, medium or high but dosn't give you the frame rate
    Interlaced footage eliminates this

What do you mean by aliasing?

      Hi barry,

I know of 24p problem and I'm going very slow with the panning.
But actually once the image is tilted all the nautical chart grid and writings are jagged. This is true also when the image is nearly steady.

It seems the same problem that Antons was showing on that scanned plan.

Once the image is tilted, the part near the observed is enlarged a lot. It seems that the layouter isn't good at upscaling....

Maybe a screen grab could explain what I'm seeing and getting in export.
The image is a HiRes scan.

      Thanks

        Yes
I see the jagged line, may be try a slighly smaller file, interesting, I have not noticed that
I use png or tga files, Edius seems to like them the best what was your file if jpg, that could be a problem
Just a thought on the movement jitter, try the motion blur filter, only effect the image when movement is present, back in the days of film one of the tricks was to slow the shutter and cause blur on the moving parts
When I tried Progressive on my camera I tried 25th shutter speed that was very acceptable providing you followed all the other rules for filming but you don't have that luxury with a still

in 6.52 you have new downscaling options in the layouter and in project settings

9000x7000 requires lots of downscaling, there is an option for lanczos3 with still images

in 6.08, try the antiflicker filter to reduce aliasing

An additional question: does the dpi of an still image influence it's quality in video? If yes, which dpi gives the best results?

Hi Anton, no budget here to upgrade.

9000x7000 requires lots of downscaling, there is an option for lanczos3 with still images
It's even small for my requirents... But actually I'm getting that problem on 1:1 and up. I never show the entire nautical chart, I just pan & zoom on the shoreline. Given that the image is tilted, one part is upscaled too much.

in 6.08, try the antiflicker filter to reduce aliasing
                I'll try it

I too I would like to know which format is better, bitmap formats (bmp or tiff ) or compressed formats like jpg?

And what resolution? Does it helps having a 300 or 600dpi image while using the 3d function?

                  tga is best

video stills created in EDIUS are 72dpi

but EDIUS does not care about dpi of images you give it, only the pixel size counts

Trying different image size/format but nothing changes.
I even tried a trial version of Proshow Producer... Worst than Edius.

This is a 7 seconds video showing the problem. In the last 3 seconds all lines and writings are jagged.

                          was that with antiflicker filter?

another thing you can try, open the still in Photoshop and apply motion blur, 90 degree x 1 pixel, save as tga and try again

create a new EDIUS project and place the still in project folder, place still on timeline and apply your move, then save and exit, zip the project folder and upload somewhere, then I see how it looks in 6.52, it may not be perfect either

do you still have Imaginate2? if so, you could create the perfect move

Yes antiflicker. I was just reading this suggestion on another thread. Let's try again...

I have to check... I saw a demo version hanging in a old Edius 4 box at my office some time ago. Is it so powerful? Never used but I guess it's old.
