  • Waveform in source window?

    hi all,

is it possible to view waveform in the source window, just like adobe premiere? it would really make selecting a part of audio very easy.

    kindly help

    regards

No it is not. The audio editing generally needs to be done in the timeline

This is just a limitation of edius forcing you to use the timeline. I understand payal why it's necessary to use the preview window for that, if I have a one hour audio recording and need only 2 minutes of it (like the vows of a wedding) in Premiere I could see the waveform in the preview window (without laying the complete file on the timeline), then quickly see the peaks in the waveform where they were speaking and then put an in and out point on it and drag just that part to the timeline.

In Edius I have to go to the end of my editing sequence or make a new sequence, drag the file in to there and then select what I need and do a copy paste to place it where it needs to be. I think Edius is the only NLE out there that can't give a waveform preview in the preview window. Coming from Premiere it's a feature I certainly miss.

        Second that !

I normally have a mics. sequence open for 'finding, things on the timeline, the drag to bin and drag it again to the master sequence is a step that I wouldn't mind to loose ...........

copy and paste works but then there will be no reference in the bin :)

I agree, I've been howling about this for years - picking sections from long takes by audio activity in the player window would be fab -

It's bonkers, an audio only clip shows black and no waveform - pointless. How are you supposed to select a section without dropping it into your sequence, which we have to do - fundamental requirement of an NLE really.

It's been a feature request since before the wheel was invented -

          One up to PPro!

I'm not sure that I understand the point of a player and programme monitor that shows no audio waveform - it really is extraordinary - why should you have to move a huge file to the timeline to simply pluck out a section, when it should appear in the player window, with audio so you can "see" where the action is -

Having to use the timeline means you may as well dump the player window altogether - what purpose does it really have? oh yes of course, it's there to allow you to mark and select a section of media that you want to include in your edit, oh er, except audio of course, silly me.

I was thinking of sending a "Feature Request" to ask for this, but then I read Steve's statement which says "don't send feature requests that have been asked for before"
so that means... what? a repeatedly asked for feature request will be ignored because its been previously requested??

                Audio Waveform in player

I couldn't agree more. What could be more daft than opening an audio clip and seeing a blank player window and having to listen to it all to find the bit you want, you are forced to put it in a scratch time line. Its like driving blind.

If its a long audio clip you scrub it jump too far onwards too easily it needs expanding which there is no feature for.

The other really useful thing missing is to show all the parts of the clip that have been used on the timeline already not just the last in and out points that were used.

Haven't coded for decades now but when keeping in mind that the waveform of a clip is generated it should be quite a simple task to show it in the player window.

While I agree with all of you on having the waveform in the Preview window it is not that bad on the timeline.

Just place the audio down on the timeline, open up the waveform and then use the cut and Trim keys with the ALT button to trim it out. It is very quick! :)

It has become quick, because it has become a forced workflow, which, in my book, technically doable (as all the competitors did it) doesn't have to be ..................

Whilst the procedure described here is accurate, the assertion that it's very quick is not. The speed is relative to the length of the clip you're inserting to the timeline. If it's an hour or more long as many of ours is, the word quick is not one that I'd choose.

Furthermore, if the selection/trimming of the audio comes towards the end of an edit when the timeline may have any number of clips already in place, most prudent editors would probably perform the "quick" procedure on a new timeline, making the process even less "quick".

The need for the feature is obvious.

Phillip... I am just asking this as I am unsure I totally understand your response.

You can do everything on the timeline that you can do in the source PLUS you can see much more of the clip than you can in the source.

You can type in timecode to jump to certain places and place in and out s to delete unwanted ranges.

This is not a sarcastic question at all... I am just trying to understand how it is so much faster in the source.

What would be the workflow, other than looking at the script, typing in the timecode to jump to a certain frame, setting in and outs and dropping it to the timeline?

It really is truly amazing. This feature has been requested for years by EDITORS, because, it is simply what editors want.

Despite this, GV and before that, Canopus totally reject the request, citing a multitude of reasons why it is either unnecessary or how it can be worked around.

Camera's don't really need a lens, a pin hole will suffice, cars work perfectly well with 3 wheels.

Why can't the company listen and stop moaning on, always explaining away every suggestion made to them? why on earth as the customer, do we have to fight every step of the way for a change or addition? Why so endlessly defensive?

How about, "Hey guys, what a great idea, we'll implement it right away"

                              To repeat myself:

The waveform is already there, the beloved *.ewc files. Is it really that difficult to show those files in the player window?
