  • Will Edius go the Extra (Red) mile?

We got the opportunity today, to spend a couple of hours in the same room with Red One #00020 and #00021 at a presentation from Silverado Systems in Folsom, CA.

For $2,000.00/day they're really stupendous cameras, worth all the hype, despite having no audio yet.

So will Edius ever edit 4k, 2k, 1k...?
It would make a great field editor and looking at the bundled Red software the new Edius GUI would seem right at home.

Doesn't Red have some kind of deal with Apple? They provided a Red RAW importer I believe for FCP.

Purely speculatively speaking, but one needs to remember that our format support comes from having close relationships with the manufacturers themselves. Without that, it's tough to support a new camera when it hits the market.

As it is, we tend to try to be (and often succeed at being) the first to offer support, often natively, of new cameras. Have not heard anything about Red support at this time.

Our current focus is for the Infinity camera (inches from shipping), and the new Sony EX devices.

Ther appears to be no real "Deal" with Apple. There's only 4 apps that can handle Red's native .R3D files, and none of them are FCP. (Must export to QT, @ 2K rez max) Kinda freaky, the notion of downrez to HD!

Uh, Edius will edit QT... I may be on to somthing (offline) here.

RedCine and RED Alert! both export down-converted files in many formats. We were very impressed to see footage manipulated directly from an 8GB CF - USB card reader. View, zoom, color, export, (and soon) send color data back to the camera.

I'm hoping the new GV Infinity camera can come close, the Red images are a knockout!

Out of curiosity, which 4 apps would those be?

Count me as one who's glad to hear that Edius will support the Sony EX1 camera; Red is just a 'nice to have'...

I have seen the RED camera close up and seen Peter Jackson's stunning film projected at 2K. May I say that the film was so compelling you could have shot it on probably any HD format and it would have looked good.

There are some serious questions about the RED camera that are yet to be critically evaluated. It is just a single chip unit and it may not have the full tonal range of the more sophisticated units. It appears to be a high end specialist tool that lacks the user flexibility of an ENG/EFP camera for a one person or two person crew. In reality I believe it's market will shrink as it's limitations are revealed and people stop being distracted by the mega hype.

I agree with GV that the Infinity and Sony EX will have far more real impact in commercial markets. For my money RED is just an amazing sideshow act.
