  • HD capture issue

This is an issue I've had for a while where I can not capture HD footage to Edius. I've tried everything I know to no avail.
I've shot everything in HD in the psat and captured it down converted to SD which most of my work called for.
Now that I have more demand for HD stuff I need some advice on where I may be going wrong.
I have edius 5 and I shoot with a Sony A1P. I have the Full HD 1080i preset to start and capture my project but the capture icon is always greyed out when the project is opened.
The camera is also set to allow Edius to capture the HD footage.
Before capture I choose 'generic HDV-input' and select the 'Canopus HQ 1920x1080 50i'
    These are my other selections:
    NHX-E2 composite
    NHX-E2 S
    NHX-E2 DV
    NHX-E2 Bay Composite
    NHX-E2 Bay S
    Generic OHCI-Input

    Any suggestions anyone?

Do you have a FireWire port on you mother board?
Give that a try. Are you trying to capture HD from the
front bay panel's FireWire. This will only do SD. If I remember my NX, I believe
the mainboard FireWire connection will do HD.
    Check your cable.

What a co-incidence. I've just posted a question with exactly the same problem, even the same Sony camera.

Steven, after a lot of trial and error, I got it to work if I used an input format of 1440 x 1080 50i in the Generic HDV Input field

In my question I asked why 1920 x 1080 didnt work

Don't know if it makes a difference, but HDV is 1440 x 1080

Yes, HDV is 1440x1080. Choosing 1920x1080 will not get you anywhere.
Start easy. Setup a 1440x1080 project setting and select your input. try to capture from there.

The camera is HDV format (1440x1080),
firewire is supported HDV & SD - 1440x1080 max. That was why 1920x1080 didn't work.

Ok jog my memory regarding the firewire cable. I have an i link cable that goes into the S 400 input which I've been using for every project.
My NX input is an earlier NHX B10.

              I'll ty the 1440x1080
              and get back to you.

By the way the Sony A1P is way under rated, I have been using it for TV broadcast for four years and everyone gives the same comment, "That must be a really expensive broadcast camera you use!"
When I mention that it's low budget entry level they are always suprised.
It's how you use that camera not how expensive.

              back soon.

Majac, I've had no luck with the 1440x1080 setting. Can you list your camera settings, input and project settings and any presets that you use.

I'll then check this against mine. I'm sure I've missed something along the way.

Are you trying to capture from the NX bay firewire? It only does SD.
Use the mainboard firewire connector on the back of the card.

Make sure that you are using Edius 5.51.
Use the 1440x1080i 59.94 project setting.
Use the Firewire input on the back of the mainboard card.
This should get you an image. If not, try a different firewire cable.

I think that PAL HDV would be 1440x1080 50i preset. I assume that is what you have in Australia.

Jerry I'm trying to reply to your answer but this web page is telling my to post an answer ten Characters long so I'll put it here instead of in your post.

The back of my card is inside my computer!
                      Are you pulling my leg?
Have I missed something since I started editing five years ago.

Ron I do have the 1440x1080 50i. I first chose this since the camera only records 50i anyway.

In your original post you said:

"Before capture I choose 'generic HDV-input' and select the 'Canopus HQ 1920x1080 50i'"

So just to clarify, your project preset is 1080 x 1440 50i and the capture preset for HDV is also 1080 x 1440 50i?

Apart from the NX, do you have a Firewire input anywhere on your PC (front or on the back)? If so, are you saying this does not work for capture?

I think Jerry was saying to use the motherboard IEEE1394 connector not the NX connector. I have only used the motherboard connection for HDV so do not know about the NX spec that Jerry refers to.

                            Problem solved!
It was the output format that I first chose.

I only have the firewire port in the NX card which is where I plug my fire wire cable (IEEE 1394 4 pin, iLink cable, S400 cable) into.

For the record here are the settings I used:

In the A1P camera I had the i Link set to off for HDV transfere to computer.

                            Project preset:
Output device- Generic OHCI HD 50Hz

                            Output format- 1440x1080 50i 48kHz 2ch

In the open project with the 'capture' drop down menu the 'input Format'
                            I chose is 'Canopus HQ 1440x1080 50i'

The capture was smooth with no drop outs.

                            Thanks everyone for your help

Big sloppy kiss for everyone!.............Yea Right!

                              Glad to see problem solved.

Sony have produced a useful pdf detailing how to hook up their cams to Edius. I googled 'sony thomson edius capture pdf' and found this. My cam is an A1E and It hooked straight in. Link below if I've copied it correctly.
