  • adding echo to sound

Hi all, I have been looking at a way to add echo to sound in Edius 5.51. I have a church recording using a zoom h1 and h4, the h4 was closer to the officiant meaning it has less echo (you know that typical echo you get in church)

I have not been able to find any setting allowing me to add some kind of "hollow sound" effect or echo, does anyone know if that exists in Edius?

I can't remember if Izotope plug-ins were supplied with Edius 5 (they are with Edius 6). There are several reverb options with this plug-in, which can be found under Audio Filters in the effects tab.

If you don't have Izotope there are some free VST plug-ins available if you do a Google search.

    Here is one example:

Many good free VST plugins on the web, google or bing it :)

The latest greatest often go for big $$, often older single effects or even packages with outdated user GUI are cheap or free, mostly working very well.

The delay button might be able to do what you want. You might have to play with the settings but it is already included in Edius 5.51.

The screen shot is from Edius 6.07. I believe it is the same. First, add a separate audio track and get your echo or delay settings that you want. Then mute the source with the checkbox and then use the rubber bands to adjust the volume of the echo that you have just set up. You will have your normal track above and then your echo track below.
It would be in your interest to invest in a 3rd party audio program such as Audition or Soundforge. There are others out there that are free, but do not have the functions of the two mentioned.

I can see it as part of utilities, remember, the update is for EDIUS5 and not for 6

Before you start to spend money on this objective could I add a small note of caution? You don't write that the preacher's voice is dry, merely that it has less echo than the other recording. The thing you need to be aware of is that any external or post reverb you use will be added to the existing echo element as well as the original sound. The result, especially when mixed with the other material may not be the effect you are seeking, indeed, it could be even less usable than your present situation.

May I suggest you do some tests with free software/plug-ins before committing yourself in terms of time or finance?

Another factor is also whether the sound matches the pictures. If you stick mainly with closeups on the preacher when his sound is dryest you could well find it matches better without any more treatment.

I'm aware from long and bitter experience of the dangers of heavy-handed application of all sound processing including reverb and compression and would always urge caution.

Thx for this tip, tried it and allthough it adds some kind of echo, its too different from the recordings that have that kind of echo recorded on location. Think I will have to see for a external solution.

Will try, church recordings at a wedding often are a challenge, the mike on the groom is very close and almost free of echo and the recorder at the priest is furthest away and causes the most echo, when used in the same sequence it really notices and I think it's not possible to remove echo but at least add some so both recording appear to be the same recording. A friend of mine uses Vegas and if I recall right there where some fixed presets to resemble a phone or a large room, not sure anymore if I saw it in vegas but it was just a matter to click the preset and have instant result that was pretty good.

I agree, but in reality the only close to "best" solution is to mic everything separately. If the preacher won't accept a radio mic on him (and many fear our radios will conflict with theirs despite my assurances - we use licenced VHF) I rely on the proximity of the groom's - not an unacceptable choice since the celebrant will usually project better than the groom (or worse, the bride). For moments when he's giving his sermon or praying located away from the groom I'll mic the spot/s where he's working. Similarly any reader is either mic'd or we stick a radio on the lectern.

Of course I accept that not everyone can afford four channels of radio mic plus two Zooms, but the topic was about matching reverb levels and depths, not the economies of production.

Finally, I've only ever dabbled with Vegas but I believe much of its sound element is derived from Sony's excellent Sound Forge which I do know has features that you describe.

I hope you're not too downhearted by the possible prospect of more investment but sadly most of us spend considerably less on the audio equipment than we do on the video - but since I first became interested in the business that's been the emphasis in television.

As I see it audio is 50% of a movie and it makes all the difference, I currently use a mixture of audio devices like a zoom h1, h4 and a iriver but all are not live monitored which always worries me, until I can hear it in post. :) i am however very satisfied with the zoom h1 combined with a clipon mike connected to it's line in because that one gives a very clean sound, even if you record to a mp3 file. I"m just looking for a tascam recorder or something like that size for the groom now because my iriver died on one channel, I can still record mono but I"m afraid it won't take too long before they other channels gives up.

Audio issues are difficult to ignore and IMO are more disruptive to the viewing experience than video glitches. Perhaps it's just me, but I'll catch a blip or pop and it'll annoy me much more than compression block artifacts or even a picture breakup.

I'll agree with that, often bad sound can break the viewing experience while the other way around things are more forgiving.
