Audio downmixed preview

We're implementing Edius for our news department and using Dell laptops as a mobile solution. Some of the reporters have asked if there's a way to hear a downmixed version of the two mono tracks (they edit in split-track) through their headphones.

I don't think there is, but is there any setting we can change to do such a thing?

If you are talking about centring the hard panned 2 channels of a split recording, so they are both centre panned for balanced stereo monitoring. Assign two different audio tracks in Edius as individual mono tracks, for instance, track 1 is audio left and track 2 is audio right. Then make sure each track is routed centre through the bus setup, then just make sure they are centred in the mixer. You can now monitor both a little easier as a centre balanced stereo out.

Just be a little careful with your microphone set ups when recording, or you may find phase issues in Edius.

The audio comes in as split track, so you'd have to do a balance and pan effect on the individual clips to actually get it to center (that i've been able to determine), and, once they do that, they would probably forget to set it back. I need something outside the sequence that when they play off the timeline they hear it mixed, but the export is still split.

Keep in mind at this point i'm just telling them to deal with it, but i'm investigating anyway.

Let me see if I get you correct......You want them to hear both tracks seperately as a full mix ....then, pull the "Pan Pot" filter on the tracks, balance them by opening the dialog box (set the upper sliders to the center so as to have it well balanced )....when finished, just untick the filter before exporting.

You don't have to touch the clips at all. As long as you assign the bus and track correctly, the track will be mono and play in the middle of the stereo field. So using two, just has both sides as mono in the middle. You would not have to touch the clips at all.

Edius is not the easiest thing to get you head around, but it can be done.

Just thought on. If they are using headphones, just use a stereo to mono adapter coming out of the computer. This way you can still have things hard panned in the timeline ready for the editor to do their job, and the person loading and watching the rushes can hear it all as mono in the headphones.

I sometimes do a similar thing with a mixer when I am using a close external mic on the subject into channel 1 left on the camera, and the safety mic onboard the camera assigned to channel 2 right.

I"ll contact you tomorrow and will provide you the workflow for this for news editing.
It will be a one click solution for mixdown (mix monitoring) and split tracks for ftp to studio or if needed link playout.

Justin. PM me your email, and I will send you a project that will centre your split audio, so that channel 1 is in the middle and channel 2 is in the middle. It is all done with the bus routing and the master channel pans. You don't have to touch any rubber bands or filters. When finished and it goes to production, if you want to carry on with the same project in post but work with the original hard panned splits. It's a simple case of a reset on the channel pans, again no touching the actual clips.
