  • Problem with Sony EX3 files

A client has several .mov files shot with a Sony EX3 camera that we can not get to open. We have tried to convert using Mpg stream, but all we get is audio.
My MAC friend can play the clips using QT10, and can convert them to H264 that we can play. My question is why can't Edius play them and what do we need to do to convert them.

If they've been "mac'd" in some way, and are not the raw BPAV folders from the camera, you'll need to visit the "CallibratedQ" website for their software which enables you to play all manner of mac- mov stuff -

..do the files open in clip Browser 2 ?

Instead of trying to open individual clips, have them send you the entire BPAV folder as it was shot by the camera. Open your clips with clipbrowser, then drag and drop them into the Edius bin.

Why in the world did they alter the original file/folder structure?
        Big mistake!

I don't have answers just questions. The project was shot in another state and all we received was the MAC HD. I can't opening them on my older MAC either.

Callibrated Q XD decode - trial it first - it is watermarked - then buy if it works - must say it has saved my bacon a million times - friggin mac users love to strip the BPAV's, turn them into something else, and dump the original folder structure - drives me nuts.

no offence to anyone with a Mac of course!

It will do the trick. now to get the client to pay for the a part of it.

Actually, the person that messed with and converted the original file should pay for it, not the client. That's what I think. Because of them, you'll be editing a file that's been transcoded several times. Quality is gone and is irreversible.

The Callibrated soft just fixes the container, so it should not affect the media, it doesn't actually transcode anything - but you are quite right, it just indicates tunnel vision from a certain quarter who think the world is mov.

I know 3D isn't everyones cuppa, but you should read the loopy hoops people are going through just to edit the stuff - it's horrible, kinda glad I'm PC and Edius

This all sounds like the result of the Sony XDCAM plugin for FCP. FCP will not see the MPEG2 inside the MP4 container, pretty ironic really seeing as MP4 is so closely associated with QT. Anyway. Apple/FCP needs to re-jig the container in order to see it, as in re-wrap it into MOV. Although there is no transcode involved in this process, the file will only be seen in Mac world, or in PC land with a further re-jigging with whatever process to either re-format back to the MP4 or decode via something else, presumably via this Calibrate software. Or maybe Calibrate re-jigs the MOV back to MP4, or another transport/program stream that a PC will see, maybe .mpg

Seeing as it is only the video files that you are concerned with, I assume this as it is unlikely that you are continuing any FCP edit on Edius. Just ask for the original Sony files. Edius can see these in a number of ways, even down to vanilla flavoured drag and drop.

                        MP4toMPG

I had several times similar probleme and I solved it with this software MP4toMPG

it will rewrapp mov to mpeg elementary stream. It will not touch video but it will encoder audio.
For me that was not a problem.

                        Try it.It is free
