  • Support for Sony PMW-EX1 XDCAM EX ?

Maybe the most interesting camera in 2007 is expected to hit the streets in November (in Europe, the price will be only EUR 6.500,- plus tax!):

Discover a wide range of high-quality products from Sony and the technology behind them, get instant access to our store and Entertainment Network.

Will Edius support this format? The spec sheet says the the camera records MPEG-2 Long GOP. So this sounds kind of ordinary.

Cool! Can you please tell us something about picture quality and how to import the video into Edius? TIA!

I'm wondering if Edius can play the mp4 files directly or do you need to convert them to mxf files using the supplied Sony software for doing this.

I'd prefer to convert to HQ - much smoother edit experience.

so what are the mp4 files refered to in the sony pdf - proxy's? There are a number of references to converting from mp4 to .mxf I see that the camera records long gop mpeg2 - but are they .mxf extension as per XDCAM HD?

The files are MPEG-2 in an MP4 wrapper ready for easy play back. They are easily re-wrapped into the proper mxf format (lossless of course).

I have trouble understanding what this camera is aimed for...is it competition to the HVX200??

That would be the most obvious comparison, and one likely target market would be independent film-makers. Some high-end event videographers are also interested in this camera due to the larger sensors compared to other low-cost HD cameras, which should help a little in low light.

Not currently -- maybe once additional vendors start making SxS cards, but the prices that have been mentioned are essentially identical to Panasonic P2 card prices.

Yes, but with three times the recording time per card for the same price. That not only improves the cost equation but makes it possible to shoot for a reasonable length of time without having to swap cards. Plus the physical format is compatible with newer laptops while P2 is not, and manufacture will be less restricted which should lead to lower prices. Everything about this is better than P2 from a practical standpoint, but the initial price is still a bit steep.
