  • Converting to Mp4

    Dear all

I wish to export to Mp4
I use to use edius to do web converting
a few days ago I met a expert on conversion

he said it is better to export it out from edius
and use procoder or Squeeze to handle the conversion

the quality will be better ..

Anyone have this kind of experince ...

And procoder and Squeeze or direct from Edius

( if direct from Edius save me alot of time )

but if export to AVI HQ standard or M2TS or .. what file is more suitable

before enter the conversion software ( please post your experince )

Using the Edius mp4 converter works very well and the quality is very very good and as you say it saves a lot of time. I find that if I use the "Anton method" explained here http://www.videoproductions.com.au/html/mpeg4.html when viewing the video it starts much quicker. I am not talking about putting it on to youtube or vimeo but by uploading using ftp to a website. I have positive feeedback that mp4 files converted under Edius take longer to load and play than mp4 files coverted under TMPenc as described on the Anton productions site. I would add that the differnce in time is not overlong and the time saved by using the Edius converter from the timeline may be preferred.

the EDIUS mp4 exporter stores the file info at the end of the file, as a result it needs to be fully downloaded before the browser can play it

when using TmpgEnc5 you can tick the streaming option which places the file info at the start of the file, as a result the file can start playing right away while it is downloading

In my experience the Edius exporter is very good and a very easy workflow. If however you require maximum quality at any given data bandwidth, you can't beat X264. Just use a version with a GUI, something like MeGUI or Handbrake. You can always use the command line interface, but it is quite complicated even for experienced compressionists and is probably unnecessary. If you use Handbrake, you also have the advantage of just changing the the extension to FLV, and using it for any Flash based requirements. I think this is down to embedded transport stream header data. This is something that I don't think you can do with an Edius export, which maybe the reason behind the perception that Edius encodes do not stream, although in my experience they do, but not as well. There are also a number of disadvantages streaming video from a traditional HTTP server compared to the good old days on RTSP. Again, this can also be the reasoning behind indifferent results when streaming the same codec produced by different encoders/transcoders. Plus some territories just have slow web connections.

Preference so far making mp4 for Vimeo
At 1280x720 I cannot tell the difference at 7Mb between Edius and Video Master Works
At 1920x1080 my preference is for Video Master Works as it plays smoother on both the PC and from Vimeo on PAN's
Have not tried Procoder and don't have the others

I used to use procoder a lot. Since getting Edius, hardly at all- with Edius 6, I don't think there's much if any advantage.
TMPGenc is good, fast, etc- use it a bit, but I think E6 will reduce that to a trickle.
There are some tricks to getting the right streaming info for files you plan to serve yourself. (Unfortunately I'm not a master of them!) One thing I did try was uploading to youtube, then downloading the mp4 file. That seemed to stream ok!
                    Work: Edius 7.20.437 on HP Z220 workstation; Edius 6.08 on i7 running Win 7 64 bit 6 GB RAM. Neo 2.0 on a Lenovo T61. JVC GY-HD201 and GY-HD110.
Home: Canon HV20 and Panasonic GH1 (hacked); Neo 3.01 on HP elitebook 8440p i7 and Neo 1 on homemade dualcore desktop.

For those wanting to add fast start to Edius 6 generated mp4 files then this small utility will place the moov atom in the correct place. http://renaun.com/blog/code/qtindexswapper/

Squeeze uses the X264 compression engine for doing its H264 encodes. This is why you will have noticed the quality of the encoding. Although higher bitrates and frame sizes become less comparably noticeable against one and other on different encoders/transcoders. X264 again, will give the best quality for the likes of BD. If you like this, you may want to try other X264 solutions, as they are free. What may be more interesting with Squeeze, is how it does on scaling.

ya this happen to the RMVB also
when the bitrate is low it perform good

but when it go to hi bitrate .. it is not that good

so any suggestion if we go for H264
                            any other software

if Cheap and freeware can handle quality like sorenson
that I will test and See

                            My Format will be mp4 , H264
