  • Unable to burn a disc

    Hi Gurus!

I'm relatively new to EDIUS 6. I've recently updated to the latest version (6.07 I think).
This is the 1st time I've tried to burn a DVD. I've placed markers on the timeline for each chapter. I then used Shift-F11 to open the Burn/DVD dialog. No matter what order I do things in (I tried several different ways), EDIUS will not allow me to burn a disc (DVD). The option to burn the disc is always disabled. At first I thought it may have been the used DVD+RW disc that I'd inserted, but erasing it, or even using a blank DVD-R didn't help either. EDIUS would not recognise the media. I ended up unchecking the burn option to just create the DVD image folder and using IMGBurn to burn the disc (a friend showed me how to do this).
What is the problem with EDIUS? Why won't it recognise the media? (I don't have a BD discs to try out). Could it be related to my project settings?

    Cheers,
    Walter

the EDIUS disk burner only works if your project setting is interlaced, which is a requirement by the DVD spec

Yeah, I found this out the hard way too. The option to burn a disc was greyed out until I changed the project settings to UpperField first, i.e. interlaced. This allowed access to the burn dialog, but it wouwldn't recognise any media I inserted into the drive.

that is normal until you go to the style tab and select DVD and not BD (default)

            Problem solved
I had the same problem when I tried it, would not write to a disk
            Solution

            In the Write tab
Untick the "Compile disk Image to folder"
Tick the "Create Disk and Export as Image file"
The image file will still be written into the "Work folder" for future use

The burner will then be ungreyed out, you can then select the Speed and away you go
I think I gave you the wrong information on the phone, please accept my apologies
I have always used Nero to burn my disks even when I have used "Disk Burner" because of the speed presets that can be set

            Hope that helps
            Regards Barry

No problems Barry. I'll check it out next time I'm in front of my editing PC. Burning the disc using IMGBurn worked just as well anyway.

After showing the video I found that I had made some errors with duplicate titles (EDIUS has a nasty habit of changing the selected title on the timeline to the new title when doing a Save As...), a duplicated clip and some chronological anomalies. After all, this was my 1ST project with EDIUS. (Thanks for all your help Barry).

              Cheers,
              Walter

When you use "Save" it overwrites the original file
When you use "Save As" make sure you change the File Name
I usually don't let Edius name the titles as it can be difficult to recognise so I use "Save As" and give each one a specific name

At the risk of going off on a tangent in this thread...

Yeah, I did "Save As" and checked to make sure the name was different. My mistake was to double click the original title in the timeline. Even a "Save As" changes the title in the timeline. I guess what EDIUS is "thinking" is that, "Oh, the user has changed the title and the name of the file whilst the title in the timeline was highlighted, so he must want me to put the new title in place of the old one."
Once I stopped doing it that way and double clicked a suitable title in the Titles bin instead, the "problem" (obviously) went away.

                  Cheers,
                  Walter

Well, I'm sitting in front of it now and looking at the "Burn to disc" screen. The "Style" tab has DVD selected as the output. The "Write" tab has the "Compile disc image to folder" option unchecked and the "Create Disc an Also Export as Image File" checked. 1 drive shows in the drive count. Yet, Drive 1 is greyed out and the message next to "Media Type" reads "Media does not support writing (DVD+R)" Interestingly, the Disc Information section shows DVR-R/RW (4.7BG) in the dropdown list as well as DVD-R DL, no DVD+R at all. (If I could insert an image I'd show you a screen dump of the window).
I have a DVD+RW in the drive. It is not erased at this point and does contain a previous DVD project. Same thing happens with a blank DVD, i.e. "Media does not support writing (DVD-R)".
                        Hmmm...
My next stop will to figure out how to download ans install the latest burner drive, although if it works with IMGBurn I would have expected it to work with EDIUS (don't they both use the SAME driver?).

This is so typical of PC installations. I have a brand new PC. The burner works just fine with IMGBurn and with Windows 7 burning. Windows tells me the latest driver is installed and up to date. I went to the LITEON website and downloaded their SmartPack Utility to update firmware for their drives. It tells me it can't find any optical drives...so typical...Even the manufacturer's own software is not capable of detecting their own hardware. So...there's no way of updating the firmware because that's all they offer. BTW, the burner is model iHBS212, bought 23rd Feb this year (2012).

So...where to now? I've sent LITEON an email asking what to do. Until there is a response, I guess I'll just have to do with IMGBurn...
