New format everywhere, trends?

Recently, I found many new formats from different manufacturers comes to our production. Just like CanopusHQ from here. DNxHD from Avid. ResPro422 from Apple.....Is that a trend or something else?
By the way, is there any difference between CanopusHQ and DNxHD?

Well technology is advancing and companies are able to compress video and audio in such way that it is hard to tell the difference between the uncompressed versions and compressed versions. Also it's easier to move around files in big networks where multiple editors work on the same type of footage.

As far as Canopus HQ vs. Avid's codec, I don't think they are the same. I don't even think anyone has done any tests to see the difference, but over the years Canopus made some of the best codecs in the market. Even Avid used to use the DV codec back in the earlier versions of Avid Xpress.

yes, it's hard to tell which one is better.But avid's format is free, so other NLE software can support its DNxHD,maybe more convenient while mutual working. Other NLE software can never edit CanopusHQ...

Yeah but Canopus HQ was made for Edius, and Edius is Canopus' (Now GV) flagship product. If they gave away Canopus HQ, I wouldn't even think it'd be worth it.

There is a free playback codec that's available for Canopus codecs...

But I do wish all these codecs were available for OSX as well as Windows, at least for Playback. I have a bunch of Canopus DV files that I want to use under OSX, but obviously I can't and I have to strip off the header and convert it to MSDV :(

Yes there is... A friend of mine did a test of several HD codecs for another company. HQ was one of the top two... Avid was not.
