  • Scrolling text flicker

I've dealt with this issue forever but never got around to asking it.

When Scrolling text in Edius, you will get a slight flicker. Anti-Flicker filter might help a little if the text is static but not when it's moving.

Here's something I read on this issue in FCP:

    _______________________________________

First, don't use pure white. You actually need a slight blur between harsh contrast lines. In the color picker, use the crayon box, and select the shade of white just above the pure white that is the default. The color is called Mercury.

Second, if it still flickers, through a Deinterlace filter on it.

Third, if it still flickers after those two steps, the bewillia's suggestion will finally help, change the speed. Not too, too slow, not too, too fast.

I get really nice scrolls out of FCP. You just have to do it right.

Does anyone know the "magic" speed or filter to get moving text not to flicker in Edius?

The flicker is actually when played on DVD.

I use the regular titler of Edius. Can't remember what it's called since I just create a new text without reading the name of the window.

I will try vistitle and see if it makes a difference.

      Thanks.

You could try this as well and see if you get the flicker.
Create your text and export it as a file with spaces etc.
Use Layouter to scroll the title and see if you get the same flicker on output to monitor.

I don't have an issue with Quick Titler and Layouter or Vistitle internal scroll or even Layouter scroll. Even when it is on DVD.

Ok, maybe I didn't explain my problem correctly.

          It's not a "flicker" problem, but a "jitter\strobe" problem.

Look at my video and jump to time: 7:31 to watch the flow of the scrolling text. Don't mind the "waving" of the text... this is just because of the youtube convertion. But notice that it's not a smooth scroll. It seems as if it's a wrong frame rate or something (it's not though).

Then see how smooth this other text is - something I found on youtube:

Here are a couple of wmv's of scroll tests that I did with Vistitle and Layouter:

            scroll test.wmv

This is more along the lines of the movie scroll

            long scroll test.wmv

You can get the same result with Vistitler alone, with the setup panel. However, if you need to bang it out quick, Vistitle and Layouter work fine, as you can see. Neither have anti-flicker applied. You might see a couple of sparkles here and there, but that is wm as far as I am concerned. On my external monitor it is perfectly clear.

Actually, I never even tried it without an anti-flicker flicker. I throw on the filter as a habit from older NLE's. Maybe that's what makes the problem. I'll try it with no filter.
