  • Edius 451c crashing when clicking the Capture button on the menu bar

I have Edius 4.02 version oiginally which I upgraded to 4.24 sucessfuly.
Recently I upgraded to 451c. During the last upgrade at the process for ProCoder Express the installer gave an error message:
    Error Number : 0x80040703
    Failed to find dll function:Install.CheckEdius4orBetter

The Installer skipped to update PCE.

I started to use the new version of Edius and everything was fine until this morning when I clicked on the capture button on the menu bar the button just become lit but the Capture menu details did not show up just the XP system gave an error message that Edius stops. In the event records an application error was recorded ( event 1000).
Tried to sart Edius again, but it gave the same error message and exited.
Tried with the DVX-E1 card and without it - no change

After restarting XP, Edius worked again until I clicked on the Capture button.

I decided to uninstall and reinstall Edius, but I could not uninstall PCE by the control panel's add/remove programmes feature, I always got the same error message:
    Error Number : 0x80040703
    Failed to find dll function:Install.CheckEdius4orBetter
Finally, I deleted the PCE folders and cleaned up the Registry then I only checked to install PCE when I did the upgrade to 451c.
Doing that this way I did not get any more the error message during the intallation process, but I still cannot touch the Capture button.

I tried to reinstall and upgrade Edius several times and now I gave it up and asking for help.

I have Intel E6600 Core2 Duo PC 2Gb RAM and XP Pro Sp2

Can you go to this subdirectory ...
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\CANOPUS SHARED\CVE

List out the files, the sizes and dates of update.

Just wondering if the installer didn't update the files correctly?

      Thanks!
      Here are the data:
      CveDsHal.dll, 4.51.0.0, 12-07-2007,
      CveHalEnum.dll, 1.5.0.1, 24-05-2007,
      CveMicroCore.dll, 1.3.0.0, 15-11-2007,
      CveXaHal.dll, 4.51.0.0, 12-07-2007,
      CveXeHal.dll, 4.51.0.0, 12-07-2007,
      XaCveHal.dll, 1.8.0.4, 29-06 2007,
      XaDso.dll, 1.8.0.2, 21-06 2007,

      XaStreamSrc.dll, 4.50.0.1, 08-06-2007

This morning I rough-edited around 70 clips in AVCHD format and save the result in CanopusHQ format for later processing. Everything works perfect until I accidently touch by the cursor the Capture button. In case it happens then I need to restart windows to be able to proceed.

I have had exactly the same problem on my system that has the NX and HD cards fitted and I have yet to get a response from Canopus UK as to how to overcome it. After a number of complete reinstalls, including WinXP and just Edius and Hamerfall HDSP sound card drivers, I discovered that the crashing only happened when the drivers for the Hammerfall HDSP digital soundcard were loaded; all previous versions since Edius V.1 have been without this problem. If I disable the sound card in Device Manager Edius will work without problems, but this is not a satisfactory solution and I have to say that I have found the Hammerfall hardware and software to be very robust, not ever having had a crash so my suspicion is that the problem is associated with the Edius driver.

Edius 451c crashing when clicking the Capture button on the menu bar

          Thank you very much, Geoff!

I have DIGI 96/8 sound card, same manufacturer as for the Hammerfall series.
I cannot test it whether it has any coonection withthe Edius crashing because now my system works perfect. I have found on Microsoft support website one reference for this application error 1000, which says that the cause might have been in connection with the automatic XP update, so I switched it off, while Edius was convertin some AVCHD clips to Canopus HQ. When Edius finished the concersion, I tried clicking on the capture menu button and it worked!!
Now when I came home tried again and it still works, no errors at all.

Here are the data from the system records showing which dll-s failed when clicking the Capture button:
(I have Hungarian version of Windows so maybe the translation is not the best...)
Failed application: edius.exe, version: 4.50.0.46, failed modul: cvedshal.dll, version: 4.51.0.0, memory address: 0x000048f0.
Failed application: edius.exe, version: 4.50.0.46, failed modul: cvedshal.dll, version: 4.51.0.0, memory address: 0x000048f0.

When restarting Edius without restarting Windows, XP gives 3 error messages Edius will not start up and the in the system records the following messages can be found:

Failed application: edius.exe, version: 4.50.0.46, failed modul: dvxcore.dll, version: 1.0.0.300, memory address: 0x0000980c.
Failed application: edius.exe, version: 4.50.0.46, failed modul: ntdll.dll, version: 5.1.2600.2180, memory address: 0x000431a0.

            :(

I've had this problem with all the updaters I have used with Edius since I purchased v4 broadcast over a year ago. They just never seem to fix it. This missing .dll, and the mess of keys left in the registry that foil further install/uninstall operations... Please, just make it go away!

For anyone curious, see this thread for my previous issues with this.

I've just downloaded the 4.54 updater and surprise surprise, the problem is still there. Its exasperating. I don't expect Edius to be as polished and as smooth as the more established Premiere and Final Cut Pro (although I would have a right too: its been in dev long enough to be held to higher standards), but for Pete's sake, make an installer that works cleanly and doesn't leave behind a mess of keys that foil further installation, uninstallation attempts.

I've reached my limit: the way GV responds to the this, and to one other glaringly missing feature in this latest update, which I have begged for, will determine whether I stick with the package, or I buy a brand new Mac, put Final Cut Pro on it, and never look back. Life is too short.
