since this is 6 channel audio, are there any options you could change in EDIUS clip properties, audio tab? such as which channels to play in a 2 channel project

whenever I run into issues like that, I open my Swiss Knife (T5) and convert the XVID to Canopus HQ and all is well

Edius probably won't read AC3 in AVI- this is made up format.

Demux to elementary tracks and load to Edius seperately.

AC3 is not intended to be used in AVI container! ;)
Maybe installing a proper codec package could help to decode AVI with embedded AC3 via directshow?
I have installed ffdshow tryout & I can't remember if I had ever any issue like that!
