DVD ripping

Im having trouble ripping a DVD it was made by a DVD recorder and want to bring it in to Edius to make a good DVD from it. I rip it with Edius I can scrub through it but it freezes after a while of playing(the timeline) then I tried exporting it to a AVI file to continue. After finishing the video cuts off at about 6 minutes and thats it. any better way to rip a DVD?

Use DGINDEX to demux VOBs- way more reliable than Edius importer. It will recreate whole programme- Edius quite often does bad frames at VOB splits. It can also decode AC3 to wav and will show you AV delay (if it exists).

Have you tried just pulling the VOB files off the disc and then just changing the file extension to .mpg then stick them straight on the timeline?
Actually, come to think of it, I seem to remember that Edius will read VOB files anyway so give that a go.

If it isn't a CSS-encrypted or multi-angle disk, you can copy over the VOB files to your computer, rename them to .MPG and load them into Edius -- done.

Only bring in the large VOBS (the smaller ones are for menus etc). There is usually at least one large VOB on the disc, only bring in that one(s)

More advanced way is to use DGINDEX+avisynth+Vdub and get video converted to 4:2:2- less chroma problems in Edius.

Because of DVD standard muxed file is split into 1024MB chunks (VOBs). It won't happen only if main vdieo+audio is smaller than 1024MB. You need reliable tool to join seamlessly all VOBs to recreate main video file. If DVD is done in pro tool Edius works fine in most cases, but if DVD was done in crap software/recorder than there are problems. Recently I had similar problem an DVD was also from a DVD recorder.

If you have DVDLab it will import the DVD recorder files and convert to mpg for re-authoring. No need to leave DVDlab if you just want to create another menu structure and burn a better DVD. That is how I would do my encoding a few years back using a Panasonic DVD recorder, recording the timeline !!!

DVD recorders are problematic, but you can bring it in as a complete reconstructed file via source browser, providing your settings are correct

Thanks guys I will check out all these ideas for the next time. This time I had to take the DVD I made and play into my BM card for capture. It got the job done even though it was a PITA.

another thing that always works perfect if all else fails is TmpgEnc mastering Works 5

perfect DVD rips to Canopus HQ, even splits if you want at chapter points

allow around 15min to convert a 60min DVD
