  • Progressive vs Interlaced - "How to" question

OK.... I've been using 4.5 Edius for several years, but never paid attention to whether my project was "progressive" or "interlaced". Now, with upgrading to 6.05, I'm forced to if I want to burn to a DVD.

Probably going to show my ignorance with this question, but I cannot find the word "Interlaced" anywhere in the project settings. I'm seeing "upper" and "lower" settings...is this the same thing? If so, which one? If not, where in Edius project settings do I choose "Interlaced".

    Thanks

When you make your project settings for your dvd make sure it has the 720x480 (i) upper setting. If not, the arrow will not light up for the dvd burn to disc program.

Yes, "lower" & "upper" indicates interlaced footage!
"upper" is the same like "top field first"
"lower" is the same like "bottom field first"

Depending on your source footage & depending on what you want as a result you have to decide which field order you want to use!

If you would like to export to BluRay or DVD your project needs to be always set to interlaced = "upper" or "top field first"!

Here are settings from Edius 5.51 and Edius 6.05 screen shots. This may help you in setting up your project.

            Just one thing,
field order of some delivered file based footage (mostly MOV container) will not be recognized correct sometimes.
Take care that your source footage has the right field order!

you can quickly notice interlace or progressive by looking at i or p on your new project format. Interlaced : 25i, 50i, Progressive : 30p, 60p
