  • Sound sync

I have to replace audio ina video with the same music froma differnt perforamnce. Needless to say the tempo of the two performances vary over time so it is not a simple drop in. I need to stretch either the video or audio a bit by varying amonts to maintain acceptable audio-video sync (+/- a frame or two). The variation is now as much as about 70 frames (NTSC) at any given instant, but not linear over time.

I can do it using the Stretch function in Audition applied piecewise over the replacement audio, but does anyone have suggestions as to a better way?

I have to do this all the time, Time Remap is your friend here, it's great for pulling the pictures into sync, if your footage is progressive, you may well see the slight speed changes, but it's usually invisible, if the footage is 50P/60P no problem, if 50i/60i also no problem there either, bit remember to switch field processing to "none"

First set the overall durations of the video/audio and the new music track to be the same, lock the new audio, it will be the reference, this will introduce an overall speed change, not visually detectable, now open up Time remap and start work on tagging those sync points.

If your alternative is elastic audio, pulling it in to picture sync at various points without pitch change, I personally would use Ableton Live, because I know it, but many DAW's will let you do this.

I also do this all the time but use Vegas to sync the audio to a guide track from Edius. Then bring back into Edius for editing.
