Edius on a MAC

Looking for advice on a MAC setup that can run Edius well, to edit HDV.

Interested on the mac book because of portability
* 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
* 1680 x 1050 pixels
* 2GB memory
* 160GB hard drive1
* 8x double-layer Super Drive
* NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics with 256MB SDRAM

But also considering the iMac
* 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme
* 2GB memory
* 500GB hard drive1
* 8x double-layer Super Drive
* ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB memory

Will Edius run well on either configuration?

I have the MacBook Pro and Edius works well with Bootcamp and mac drive.

I have a Dell laptop with similar specs and it works tolerably well for basic HDV editing in Edius, plus there are several posters here who run Edius on the Macbook Pros. I like laptops for their portability but editing can be sluggish if you capture and edit in the HDV format; for better performance get a large external hard drive and capture/edit using the Edius "HQ" format.

I have a MacBook (not Pro) Core Duo 2 2.8GHz with 2 Gb system memory and Parallels to run Windows XP Professional. Edius 4.0 runs without a problem.

Different.

Parallels runs Windows as an OS within OSX. A Virtual Windows.
Bootcamp you really are booting into Windows and just running Windows.

What I'm doing is using Bootcamp and Macdrive to see the OSX partition and read and write files to it from within windows. The only thing I use the MacOS for is authoring in DVDStudio Pro. When I want to do that I reboot into OSX.

I should also say that I use an extrernal eSATA drive and a Express Card eSATA adaptor to keep my video files on. It's the fastest external connection I've ever had. Faster and more responsive than even Firewire. Highly recommended, though there aren't too man eSATA connectors that work with the MB Pro. Sonnet does one and I have one made by Merax which came from NewEgg but doesn't seem to be on their site now.
And it works fine under Windows and Mac.

Just to let you guys know a new company released an NTFS reader/writer (Still beta though) for OSX.

So if your main editor is Edius, I recommend that you use NTFS for that drive, then use the above driver to read/write to NTFS partitions from OSX.

MacDrive is giving me problems with opening the properties of files within Edius, so I don't use it.

I used a trial of VMWare Fusion, and Edius overlay did not work. Parallels have not tried yet, but I think it will because it supports DirectX9 and Fusion only supports 8.1.

I use Bootcamp with the NX without any major problems, everythings working fine. All my drives are connected via SMB (Samba network that's connected to a Windows box) so I have none of those "file system" issues.

I have MacDrive 6.1.5 (I got it from a friend who doesn't use Windows anymore). Open any project and load a file from an HFS+ drive in Edius, then go into it's properties from within Edius (Alt+Enter) from the bin or even the timeline. It gives an error.

How you don't using FCP2 for edit and authoring in DVDStudio Pro? I just ask you the question if you don't mind.

I have FCP6 and I don't use it for events either. I use Edius.

Thanks for the explanation Dave, I'll look out for that. What files are you keeping on the Mac partition anyhow that you'd need in Edius? I only ever seem to be taking files the other direction: from edit to dvd authoring.

Landon, I find that editing on the PC using Edius (or Premiere Pro) a much more pleasurable, fast, and efficient process than using Final Cut on the Mac. I get considerably more realtime full resolution preview with my DVStorm and Edius than I ever get in Final Cut. I think that DVDStudio Pro is the best DVD authoring package (in my price range) out there. So I edit on the PC and author DVDs on the Mac. I think there are quite a few of us doing that. I encode my MPEGs with Procoder 2 and convert the audio to AC3 with compressor. I feel that I get the best of both worlds. Hope that answers your question.

for now I have an internal 400GB drive for AE work (Later on I will be going eSATA 5 drive RAID5). I don't use this drive for Edius, rather I have a gigabit network with over 2TB of space on my Storm2 machine and I feed Edius stuff from there and it's plenty for SD work. I have no issues under Windows I just mount the drives as lettered drives over the network, so if I made a project on drive N: on the Storm, I just open the project over the network from the Mac with the letter N in My Computer, so it's all perfectly working fine. Since with SMB there is no file system etc, I have no issues with files over 4GB etc.
