  • How Not to Have all Sequences Appear over Timeline when "Importing Sequence"

    Hi,
I use Edius 6 to cut news shows.

I'm wondering whether there is a setting that will keep from all the sequences contained in a project from loading above a timeline every time I "Import Sequence".

With many VOSOTS and Packages in a show, I'd like to be able to keep the tabs above my timeline to only the ones I've cut in my project.

    Thanks,

    Andy

Hi Andy. Nice to see you here.
There is no setting to only bring a certain number of sequences in a project to another project. But after you use Import Sequence, you can close all of the tabs that you do not need by right clicking on them and Close Sequence.

Thanks for your response, PS. I'm familiar with that and it's a pain. Time is of the essence in news, so the neater things are the better.

I think the default should be that all imported sequences do not appear over the timeline, with an option to activate their appearance, if one needs them.

Let's say I've been editing 10 sequences in my news segment and then I bring in projects other photographers and editors has been editing that each have 10 more sequences that I don't need, that's a pain for me as a show editor. As news editors all we need is the source material and once in a while a sequence someone has edited for another show which we'd prefer neatly available in the individual folders in the bin.

It would really be nice to have an option somewhere in Project Settings that stated "Bring all imported sequences to Timeline".

I would encourage you guys to look into this option when mulling future upgrades. Seems like a simple fix :)

      Thanks again,

      Andy

Andy, maybe this will help. If all you need is the source footage and not all their edits and cuts have the other editors and photogs right click on the bin in their projects with the source footage and "export" the bin. Then you just right click in the folder window of your bin and import the bin. You get their bin with the source footage and the In/Out points they may have set even come along with it. They could rough cut footage that way. Then you import the bin and clean it up.

You would have a new bin from each import but not a bunch of sequence tabs. If they had their bins named properly it could be a way to manage your media assets from others.

Just an idea. Hope it helps.

          Another idea...

The other editors can place all footage you need on a timeline and choose "add to bin as sequence". This option can be for the entire timeline, between IN\OUT, or selected clips (you can assign each option a keyboard shortcut in the user settings). Then the editor can then drag this nested sequence to the timeline, replacing the footage, right click this sequence tab and choose "close all other sequences" and save.

When you import this project, only the nested sequence will be open in a tab and you won't have to see all of his edits.

Hope I understood what you need.

            Thanks for the hint, Philip.

Sometimes an editor MAY need those sequences (lets say I want to use footage that's been filtered or laid out in a certain way and don't have the time to redo it for my show), and so it's good to have that option. I want to be able to retrieve them on an "on need" basis from a folder above, but since I usually DON'T need it, I don't understand why it needs to live above the timeline as well, adding to clutter and confusion.

Just seems like it would be a simple selectable option to add to Settings that would make a lot of our lives easier.

Attached is what my Timeline looks by the end of the night. This is after I've closed all unnecessary Sequences that have plopped themselves there.

            Andy

PS. Here's another organizational type problem: If I name a sequence in a Tab, it simultaneously names the sequence in the bin. If I name it in the bin, it doesn't name it in the Tab.

That is because you are not using the correct function.

When you rename the sequence form the timeline you choose the sequence-> sequence settings and then renamed.

When you want to do the same in the bin you do the same right click on the sequence and choose sequence settings.

This will do a rename exactly as when it is opened as a sequence tab on the timeline and thus will update accordingly.

              BTW
When importing the project to the bin timeline sequences are also imported . When double clicking on the needed sequence the sequence tab will open as a timeline . Your footage is always available.

Aha ! Thanks, Steve. My eyes always immediately went to "Rename" and never noticed the "Sequence Settings" option.

As far as the BTW. That I'm aware of. Again, I just don't need an imported sequence to assume that's it's needed as a Tab above the Timeline.

That's when you can use the sequence as a clip in the sequences (timeline ) you have open now.
                  It is easy.

Sorry Steve, I don't quite understand what you're trying to say here.
