  • Multicam speed up technique needed

    Hi
Have been evaluating Edius and the multicam feature has me hooked with one caveat.. I cannot speed the process up beyond real time.
Using a three camera setup to edit hockey games which go about an hour each I've tried selecting cameras during FF playback but cannot seem to find the combination of key strokes to accomplish this nor am I sufficiently familiar with the program to assign key strokes. I should be able to get through an hour of hockey in about 15 minutes if someone would please and thank you, point out a technique.

    Maybe found a work around
Changing the playback speed of each track in the timeline to 200% stills allows cameras to be selected in multicam
Now will I remember to reset the playback speed to 100% before exporting to file?

How about moving through the timeline using the keyboard? Shift-Left and Shift-Right move ten frames at a time, if you hold them down you can move through the video at an accelerated pace both forwards and backwards. You also get audio with this technique.

Another way of doing it is using the l key to speed up.
When you are at a place where you want a cut point (camera switch) stop the playback and use the control key and the number of the camera (on the numpad)you want to switch to. This way you can get accurate cut points but still have speed when going through the footage.
It isn't exactly what you want but it is a way of doing it.

thanks for the suggestions. However both the L and the shift right procedures require a cumbersome halt in order to select a different camera thus slowing the process.
My 'work around' by increasing the playback rate by rt click on track-timeeffect-speed 300% also contracted the length of the clip and although speedy thruput while editing was achieved everything else was screwed up

This was a feature we had in the past, but it was somehow lost on one of the updates. We have requested that it be fixed, but no luck so far.

Probably during the early years of avchd where achieving even 1x anything was a miracle let alone trying to crunch the output of a bunch of cameras all at once.
Unfortunately I'll have to pass because I really do need 3x editing so I can edit 30 hours in 10 rather real time

Seems to be based on macro-like functionality!
May the Edius Macro Generator can do the same with a lot more options to create customized macros.
And additionally it's a way cheaper.

There is also a free version.

I just drag the playhead with the left mouse, this way you can go as fast as you want and slow as you want and stop on a dime and hit 0 on the numeric keypad then 1,2 or 3 for camera, or if I remember I use to use JKL keyboard to go fast or slow but didn't like it as much as manual drag.

I understand what is wanted and I too would like the feature returned. I would like to use my Shuttle Pro V2 to scroll through the video and then just mark the cameras with the mouse in my right hand ( or the keypad as it used to be), with the left hand controlling the Shuttle. Doesn't work at the moment and will only mark cameras in normal play speed. The OP is wanting to do the same as I would like for my theatre shows. Watch at 2 or 3 times speed and switch cameras while watching.

If you guys keep tapping the L key on the keyboard, don't it goes faster for you?

Yes the video will of course play faster but then one cannot select any of the cameras. Camera selection is only possible at normal play speed. At least I have not found a way of getting a camera selection at any speed other than normal play speed.

I don't see how accurate you can select camera at fast speed? one camera might be re frame a shot at a certain time and if you are going at fast speed, you could easily pass it before you can pick another camera, then you have to go back, don't know maybe you guys are working differently than I am.

Yes that is true but a lot of the time the shot change is not needed to be very accurate, just a change like from a closeup to full stage in my case to get an entrance. And with viewing alll the cameras I can see that quickly knowing that is where I will switch next. I don't need to actually get the exact moment the actor enters just that there is now another actor on stage. If the action is critical I can go back and fine tune. I even do that now playing at normal speed and fine tune exactly to the actors lines. However a lot of the time I could do the changes at much higher playback speed. Using the shuttle I could just be at 1.5 time realtime and that would make a difference in the edit time for a 2 hour show.
