  • Edius 6.03 extremely slow

Customer just called (it's 10.45pm here!) and has a problem: he works with Edius 6.03 and just opened a project he edited for months. All of a sudden he can't play back the timeline in realtime anymore. Also, rendering segments and adding them to the the timeline takes extremely long (1min is about 10min rendering, task manager reports just 1% use). Hardware including harddisks is fully functional, no other programs running. Any ideas?

Open Task Manager, go to the Performance tab, use Resource Monitor to keep an eye on Disk I/O and the CPU's maximum frequency percentage.

If what they are doing is I/O bound, the CPU will be mostly idle while there is lots of I/O. If the CPU is overheating it will throttle by reducing the clock speed, so the CPU's maximum frequency will be very low (single digits or low double digits). Note that the CPU maximum frequency is not the same as the CPU usage percentage.

CPU (i7-950) is running at full speed, no thermal problems at all.

Steve, he has both a SP and a HDSpark.

Afaik: yes. He told me that he didn't change a thing. And a cpu usage of 1% looks like nothing is running in the background.

If they use any form of RAID, make sure the array isn't degraded and/or rebuilding.

No Raid in use. No harddisk error/failure.
