  • Exporting Audio as Stems for Sound Post Production

    Hi to all,

Does anyone use External Audio applications for sound Post Production after final picture cut in Edius 6.03.

I would like to export the audio only component of an edit as separate tracks, either as stereo or mono where applicable, and import them into Studio One Pro. (This application is pretty much identical to Pro Tools)
However it does not import OMF or AAF import yet, so I am wondering if perhaps someone has a workflow for achieving this.
My audio application can use video created by Edius 6.03. (I have tested this and it is in perfect sync).
    Any advice appreciated

    Regards
    Ronnie O

I've used Vegas 8 as it imports AAF and handles audio pretty well, Pro Tools it is not, but it runs VST's really well, with sample level editing.

You can export as .wav for each channel. If you are importing into a Presonus multi-track project you shouldn't have a problem.

        Thanks PaulTV & Jerry

I have actually tried to export as .wav each track but unfortunately Presonus gives an error stating "this format is not supported". I can open the exported .wav files in Sony's soundforge 10 and they import as 48Khz 24 bit .wav files which I know Studio one will load into a multitrack project but the files are not single stereo files on export from Edius. They are in fact all the audio tracks from the Edius project bundled into one file containing all 4 stereo tracks.
BTW I exported each track (4x stereo tracks) on its own whilst the other 3 were muted/disabled but the resulting export from Edius is still 4 stereo tracks 1 with audio the other 3 mute.
Is there a function I am not setting correctly? Apologies if this is a error on my behalf.
        Regards
        Ronnie

If you have a 4 channel out project preset EDIUS will export 4 channels out unless you tell it that you want 2 channels.
There is a selection box which allows this.

I should do as your signature note says "read a bit more" again thanks that has solved the issue.

Just use mono wav files for each channel- in Edius by default they are broadcast wavs, so they have embedded timecode- useful for syncing and works with every pro audio application.

For audio mixing outside if Edius I use Wavelab, can handle wav & broadcast wav (almost any audio format in & out) in virtually any resolution (32bit) and sample rate (384Khz).

Similar to Edius, extremely stable, fast and can load 8 VST effects in realtime per channel, it handles virtually any VST you throw at it, it's like a Swiss army knife.

Really soundcard friendly, works with low grade to high grade seamlessly.

For more complicated jobs look at Protools and Nuendo.

                  You are welcome.

If you don't really need four dedicated channels out it might be worth it to change your project presets to 2 channel.

Steve & all who responded many thanks. This forum is the 'Best' resource in its field.
Steve, you are right, although on occasions I output baseband to Digital Betacam (SDI) full mix to Tks 1&2 Fx to Tk 3 Mix minus narration to Tk 4. I have now a preset for both situations.

On a separate note I was able to export individual stereo tracks and that worked a treat, however, Presonus Studio One Pro indicates the resulting PCM .wav files as 'Unknown format'. My work around was to open them in Soundforge vers.10c and re-save them as Microsoft wave files 48kHz 24 bit which Presonus Studio One Pro then recognized and imported.
Can you shed any light on this or should I contact Presonus.

                    Regards

                    Ronnie

                    Additional note:

It appears Presonus Studio One Pro does not import BWF format yet. Maybe in Vers 2.0 Pro to be released this year.

                    Regards
