  • Exported while in proxy mode

I did major exports on my work computer via my iphone Teamviewer app so I'm not at work to check the quality, but I just noticed that the Edius project was still in proxy mode during the export and wanted to ask, if you must exit proxy mode before you export? In other words, will Edius export from the original footage or use the proxys, meaning that the exports will be very reduced quality?

I used my custom export presets.

    Hi zvit.

Whatever your timeline content is at the time of export, will be the source for the export, regardless of whether the export settings are lower or higher quality settings compared to that of the project settings or the timeline physical content.

    Cheers.

    Dave.

I got to work this morning and checked the exported files and they seemed to be full quality. The file sizes were about 20GB each, the resolution was 1920x1080 (g-spot) and I even burned it to blu-ray and played it and it looks fine. I rechecked and yes, I was in proxy mode when I did the exports. Please tell me that either I got lucky or that you are mistaken.

I'm still trying to get to the bottom of this so I should know if to be careful remembering to turn off the proxy mode before I export, so I exported a few seconds of video in proxy mode and not and attached is the results. They are both full res and the same size.

I think that even if you are in proxy mode, Edius will export the full res if that's what the res is in your export settings. It would be like exporting with a DV setting in a full HD project. Your footage will be exported to DV even though your original footage is HD. I think it depends on the export settings and not on the timeline. (Of course, if Edius has what to work with and you're not down\up-converting)

I guess the real question might be what source is Edius creating the export from? The proxy source in your timeline when in proxy mode... or the original source when not in proxy mode. Logic says both exports will be the same in size and pixel resolution as they will match the render codec you have set for timeline export.... however they could be very different in quality.
Again logic would say switch back out of proxy mode for final output. I could be wrong though.

            Best

The quality indicator would be how many pixels are in each frame and how many frames are there per second. As you see in both exports, they both have 1920x1080 pixels and 25 fps. So the quality is the same.

                Hi Dave.

Can't believe the amount of times you say what I'm thinking. Must be some sort of lost family link or something :) Either that or you're a Scouser at heart (a native of Liverpool).

                Cheers mate.

                Dave.

It seems when you are editing in Edius in proxy mode on the same machine as the Hi res files are stored (IE:project not checked out and proxy only) then Edius will automatically access the Hi resolution files for the print to file operation (or at least in a small test just done here with proxy's created from HQ source)... so it seems for non checked out projects were the source Hi resolution files reside on the same system Edius will use them for print to file operations. Obviously not the case for checked out projects were the Hi res live on the main system and have not been copied across at check out time.

@zvit.. Technically you are correct... but a low res source say SD 720x576 50i DV rendered to 1920X1080 50i has all the physical characteristics of HD but is actually just uprezed SD.. nothing more.

@Dave.. Just a few score miles down the road mate... a small village called LLynclys now in Salop... grew up supporting Everton ;-) so maybe were not related after all.
